I'm a hardcore liberal and I will punch anybody who threatens my right to free speech by suppressing someone else's.

"Live in fear"
SolRo - 2017-02-08
How about threatening ethnic cleansing ?

Anaxagoras - 2017-02-08
.... yeah.... see.... we're not really objecting to the alt-right's "threats to our free speech". We're objecting to all the other shit they're trying to do. And I, for one, will quite happily suppress their free speech in order to prevent their other goals.

Xenocide - 2017-02-08
You wouldn't even be suppressing their free speech. The first amendment does not cover threats of violence or speech which results in the immediate harm of another person.

The entire Nazi ideology is built around the threat of violence. You cannot advocate Nazi ideals without implicitly threatening to kill a whole bunch of people.

If I stand on a soap box in a crowded street and start pointing at random passerby and saying "My friends and I are going to kill you. Yes, you. I'm not joking," that's not protected speech and I would rightfully get my ass beat for it.

Well, it's not any more protected if I dress it up with internet frog memes and hide my intent behind thinly-veiled dog whistles.

Bort - 2017-02-08
I feel the need to draw a distinction between imminent action and more abstract statements. Like, elsewhere recently, there was a little bit of discussion about blacks with a "kill whitey" attitude ... would white people (or indeed, any interested bystanders) be justified in going after blacks who merely predict that someday there will need to be an uprising against whites? White Americans are on the wrong side of history as far as that goes, and it's probably true that whites aren't going to voluntarily undo the systems that privilege whites ... and punching blacks who say so just reinforces the point.

Also, by that standard I deserve to be punched.

NewHeavenSockman - 2017-02-08
i get the feeling you're the sort of "hardcore liberal" whose only concrete political positions are "I voted for obama" and "feminists should stop talking about political correctness" and everything else is just bland contempt for people who have interests besides cartoons and video games

SolRo - 2017-02-08
Nazi propaganda is so abstract dillan roof only abstractly killed 9 black people

Scrimmjob - 2017-02-08
Fuck yeah man, I punched so many fucking Nazi's today, let me tell ya. I punched my Nazi boss right in the mouth when he told me to get back to work and stop talking about all the Nazi's I punched. I punched that old lady Nazi across the street whose Arian hell hounds always bark at me when I walk by. I really came in my pants when I punched that Nazi infant on the bus this morning, he was spouting his hate speech or crying, but I'm pretty sure it was hate speech. Holy fuck boys, it feels great to be an all American tough guy liberal, saving the country one Nazi punch at a time.

15th - 2017-02-08
Hey SoIRo, if you saw a guy with a sign that read "Sharia Law 4 fags N' women" do you punch him too? Or is that more complicated?

Just curious.

15th - 2017-02-08
I'm not implying you would or wouldn't. I'm just curious if righteous mob violence is an equal opportunity thing. I believe it'd be wrong to hit him or a Nazi or a Baptist Church preacher or anyone based on their speech. But, that's just me.

endlesschris - 2017-02-08
I look forward to seeing how this "live in fear" mentality works out for you all in the second term you are handing Trump. The berkeley protestors put Milo's back back on the #1 best seller list, got him a slew of television appearances, and started the drafting of legislation to protect free speech on state college campuses.

Last I checked that guy wasn't living in fear, he was laughing all the way to the bank.

Waugh - 2017-02-08
frog whistles

Anaxagoras - 2017-02-08
I see. So, Chris, first you claim that cheering Spencer's punch was hypocritical. When that was shown to be bullshit, you not only change the subject, you also change the person we're talking about.

Don't worry, brah. None of us noticed. You totally got away with that clever misdirection.

endlesschris - 2017-02-08
All symptoms of the same idiotic disease infecting you wannabe anarchists who fail to understand the basic fundamentals of a free government, or why you should be interested in protecting them ESPECIALLY in this radical climate.

But sure, remove the societal standard that protects all speech and move to what you're proposing, which is: "it's okay to justify violence against those whose ideology you oppose on the basis of their speech." Watch as that idea infects the same people you fundamentally oppose, and thousands of nazis seize the window you've created to start smashing faces.

Go for it man.

endlesschris - 2017-02-08
OR: you could stop focusing on finding moronic elements to beat up; those who exist not even on the fringes but ENTIRELY OUTSIDE the oppressive system which is actually ruining the country; then use your supposedly radical politics to take on targets that actually fucking matter.

We have a singular target, its name is Trump. Stop wasting time on this idiotic distraction, and stop tying yourself up in knots trying to find a flimsy justification for threatening the civil rights of the very groups you claim to be fighting for.

Fezren - 2017-02-08
"The entire Nazi ideology is built around the threat of violence. You cannot advocate Nazi ideals without implicitly threatening to kill a whole bunch of people."

The whole "bash the fash" thing hinges upon this ridiculous argument. If it were true, and it's not, these "Nazi fascists" could be arrested for inciting and threatening violence, because they would be breaking the law. And this violation of the law carries a specific penalty, which is not vigilante face punches.

I find it kind of interesting, living in a very liberal state (which I love) with very strict, liberal self-defense laws that do not allow you to punch people in the face even if you are under actual physical assault. You're supposed to flee, and if it can be proven that you didn't try to flee, you can be charged with assault. Now we have liberals trying to justify physical violence, preemptively, in "self-defense" against perceived verbal threats.

Maybe people aren't actually that different after all. We all want to punch people in the face sometimes. Some people just like to come up with bullshit moral justifications that contradict their own ideology.

Xenocide - 2017-02-08
Chris makes a good point when he mentions that this punching might lead to Nazis being violent. I mean, that would be unprecedented: who ever heard of Nazis being violent before? Sure, there was that time they slaughtered six million people in murder camps, but they probably HAD to do that because someone punched one of them. I'm sure that when modern Nazis like Spencer openly talk about eliminating the black race from the face of the Earth or turning North America into a "white ethno-state," they mean it in a friendly, non-violent way.

Also, when they go on killing sprees and murder people in black churches and mosques, that's also them being nonviolent, somehow. And yet liberals insist on being RUDE to these people!

It's so sad. When will us liberals learn to live together in harmony with people who don't want us to live at all?

Seriously, what Chris was doing up there was falling ass-backwards into one of the fascists' favorite justifications: "You deserve what we're doing to you because you resisted."

simon666 - 2017-02-08
So when I used to go to punk and hardcore shows in the SF Bay Area in the 90s, every once in a while, skinheads (neo-nazi types, not oi types) would show up. Usually they were told to leave. Usually they wouldn't, and they were told to leave or risk getting the shit kicked out of them. One time at Gilman a lone skin showed up to a hardcore show. He was tall and bald. The singer of the band, Powerhouse, says over the mic that the skin wasn't wanted here and that he needed to leave. A few songs go by and I'm standing next to the skin who doesn't move. The singer gets on the mic again and says "this is our last song, if you're not gone by the time it's over, every person in here is going to beat your ass". The song ends. Gilman staff come up to the guy and ask if he would like them to walk him out. The skinhead says sure an follows them to the front door. Everyone floods out the side door and runs around the building. I watched this skinhead get stomped on by 10-12 guys. He was up against one of those steel security gates that rolls down from the top. The sound of his body clanging up against that (he was on the ground already) filled the air. He was blooded. His no was sideways. No doubt ribs were broken. His jaw was crooked and he was likely missing teeth. After 10 minutes of laying motionless, gets himself up, and slows limps toward 1st street.

Everyone felt very good about themselves and about the people who disfigured the skin. I felt sick to my stomach.

Punching Nazis is illegal, but there are things out there worth going to jail for. I'm not in punching-nazis shape, but would bail out anyone who was game.

What Nazis don't get to do is call liberal hypocrites when their entire ideology is essentially boils down to the mobilization of the state and its people for war. To take a moral stand on something, you need to be able to hold some sort of moral high ground, at least theoretically.

I'm not sure if Spencer qualifies as a N-A-Z-I, despite what he might or might not tell you. As a lot of people consider Nazi movements that came after German and Italian fascism to be ill-informed historical blips. I'm with Robert Paxton in his assertion that every country produces its own native fascist movements and trying "replant" German fascism elsewhere is a useless and ridiculous endeavor. But for some reason he was still all about using German terminology in that YouTube clip I saw. Good luck with that, Dick.

Waugh - 2017-02-08
correct, don't conjure the specter of mass murder if you're not ready for a fight. assault is illegal whether they're a neo-nazi or not, that's not going to change by popular demand. if you're so sympathetic toward fascists send them a fuckin candygram whenever someone hits them, who cares.

Fezren - 2017-02-08
"What Nazis don't get to do is call liberal hypocrites when their entire ideology is essentially boils down to the mobilization of the state and its people for war. To take a moral stand on something, you need to be able to hold some sort of moral high ground, at least theoretically. "

Actually you don't have to claim any moral high ground to call somebody a hypocrite. It's either a statement of fact or not.

" if you're so sympathetic toward fascists send them a fuckin candygram whenever someone hits them, who cares."

I'm not for Nazis, I'm against glorifying thuggery. If you're so sympathetic towards criminals, maybe you can send them a candygram when they get put in prison, which is where they belong.

Waugh - 2017-02-08
how about i contribute to legal defense funds for criminal antifascists instead just to thumb my nose at your handwringing and false equivalencies, dipshit

Fezren - 2017-02-09
I'm sure I have not wrung my hands or made any false equivalencies, but since you'd like to bring it up, Waugh/Bawbag, lets talk about the false equivalency of comparing a pathetically ineffectual and ridiculous group of "Nazis" to the actual German Nazi Party as a justification to act super-edgy and commit violence. Mark Spencer is totally Hitler.

Oh, and people like you and antifa? Totally saviors of society. What would we do without a group of thugs punching other, ideological thugs in the face? I'm so glad that people like you have decided to take it upon yourself to decide what justice should be meted to who and for what.

But I'm pretty sure that you are actually too much of a pussy to punch anyone in the face. So keep wringing YOUR hands, unable to enact your vengeance on those in society you personally deem worthy of violent assault.

Gmork - 2017-02-09
Bawbag may be an asshole but he really doesn't deserve the comparison to waugh.

Fezren - 2017-02-09
Well, Gmork, let me explain my reasoning:

1. Sudden disappearance of Bawbag from PoETV coinciding with sudden appearance of Waugh on PoETV.
2. Both users share a troll-like attitude.
3. Both users share stances on current events
4. Both users share much of the same use of terminology, specifically a baffling retort of "false equivalencies" and "hand-wringing" and "dog whistles" where such accusations are not, to my knowledge, valid assessments of statements made.
5. Both users share a need to let other users know that they "have been here since the beginning"

I'm no "internet detective" but that is quite a lot of coincidence, no?

Fezren - 2017-02-09
I've got one more for you actually:

6. Waugh claims everyone on this site is *expletive deleted* and seems to make statements disliking the general user base, Bawbag has made statements claiming that the site has become, and I'm paraphrasing, "overrun with alt-right garbage posting users".

15th - 2017-02-09
I love/hate both bawbag and waugh. Moot point. Shut up. Nazi.

Fezren - 2017-02-09
I'll shut up if you can explain the reasoning behind your assumption that I'm a Nazi.

NewHeavenSockman - 2017-02-09
yes it all makes sense, every fourth week, after rachel maddow signs off, bawbag sheds his stilted prose and assumes the form of...THE WEREWAUGH

i'm going to be charitable and chalk this up as some oafish attempt to sow discord because the alternative is way too surreal to consider

Jeriko-1 - 2017-02-09
I remember when I was in my 20's at a library seeing a documented Nazi atrocity in a book (Funny how those pesky books can point out the awful things people do.) that burned itself into my brain. I won't go into details but it was pretty much on the HOLY SHIT scale.

You wanna pop them in the jaw? Don't let me stop you...

Fezren - 2017-02-08
I doubt many real Nazis are going to start "living in fear" of getting sucker-punched in public. I think a far more likely scenario is that they will introduce some form of security.

I can't say I'm gonna feel sorry for the first antifa punk who gets shot to death trying to punch a guy in the face, much the same way I don't feel sorry for violent, rioting "protesters" when they get gassed, sprayed, or beaten by police.
SolRo - 2017-02-08
Nazi is against violence on nazis.

Nazi supports violence against those he wants exterminated.

Fezren - 2017-02-08
An anti-Semite just called me a Nazi.

Nobody takes you seriously SolRo.

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-02-08
Congratulations on perfectly illustrating what makes this whole punching nazis thing fucking stupid, SolRo.

Your definition of Nazi includes people who said a thing on a website you have decided is secret-code-nazi-talk because it's not liberal enough for you.

Waugh - 2017-02-08
solro i'm with you for once, fascists are all food for acheron and anyone who stands in the way of someone's struggle against freedom's enemies deserves what they get as well

Waugh - 2017-02-08
i don't believe it's strategic to try and intimidate reactionaries, though. you have to terrorize them.

SolRo - 2017-02-09
so farzen, are you a Zionist or just a regular white supremacist that's trying to pull the 'YOURE THE INTOLLERANT ONE!' fucktard routine?

NewHeavenSockman - 2017-02-09
i'm pretty sure he's one of the people here that appears only during videos where he can swoop in and dribble out a stream of anti-sjw buzzwords in that "owned by logic" prose style designed to make the libtards "hot under the collar!!!!"

so yeah he's just a garden variety boring shithead

Fezren - 2017-02-09
No, just commenting on the irony of being called a Nazi, even though I haven't said anything that supports Nazis, while being accused by an actual anti-Semite.

NewHeavenSockman, at least I'm not an hysterical idiot whose only responses lie somewhere between conspiracy theory and ad hominem. Stay classy.

NewHeavenSockman - 2017-02-08
ah i see if we carefully and peacefully protest with full reverence for free speech, when the inevitable terrorist attack occurs and trump has to decide his next move, he'll stop and think "huh those hardcore liberals have been really caring about free speech maybe we should be too"

to put it another way a power grab is a when and not if scenario, if antifa wants to put a little pain on the alt-right in the meantime, it's all fine with me; the outcome won't be any worse than if we were all craven shits. and yeah, if your political discourse is solely focused on posting captain america memes on twitter you're part of the problem, but hey guess what not everyone is an easy strawman to be a lazy disaffected nerd about

anywaaaaaaay i'm not even sure why i'm typing this shit up, since you did the "stop focusing on these EXTREMIST WEIRDOS" argument in a time when steve bannon is currently on the nsc
NewHeavenSockman - 2017-02-08
you can probably figure out what this is in reply to right guys

Gmork - 2017-02-09
It stands on its own.

SolRo - 2017-02-09
The reason bannon got his position is because too many leftist idiots were crying about protecting his free hate speech and hardly anyone was writing hatemail and boycotting any organization that gave him and his rag a platform (I mean shit, that garbage still shows up in the google news feed).

Well good job! mission accomplished!

Now he can spend the next 4 years taking away way more of your rights than just free speech (which he will also take, and not even hateful stuff that some idiot would say is ironic 'because that's what you wanted to do hurf hurf durf!!!'. he'll try his hardest to suppress and ban any speech, no matter how mild, that doesn't promote his agenda)

Bort - 2017-02-09
It's okay to defend Gannon's right to free speech ... so long as you defend your own by VOTING. Which is the thing the Left is at its most shittiest at.

Bort - 2017-02-08
Can we agree on Jill Stein's head and its need to be punched?

Bort - 2017-02-08
I'm no misogynist.

Waugh - 2017-02-08
so prove it and shut up when you get caught transferring a discussion about assaulting neonazis to "jokes" about assaulting women, asshole

Bort - 2017-02-08
Not "women", one deserving person who happens to be a woman and has a pretty big hand in why Trump is president.

Waugh - 2017-02-08

Bort - 2017-02-08
Trump's margin in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania was in each case less than the Stein vote. Stein voters could have put Hillary in office.

"Jalisco" isn't how you spell "jail", retard.

Waugh - 2017-02-08

SolRo - 2017-02-09
There were a ton of reasons that snowballed into an avalanche to destroy what should have been a very one-sided victory.

Gmork - 2017-02-09

Bort - 2017-02-09
I'll be more honest than this matter truly calls for. No, I do not believe in actually literally punching Jill Stein in the head. But the Tweet in question -- where Stein blames DeVos's 51-50 confirmation on "corporate Democrats" when every last Democrat voted against her -- is exactly the sort of thinking that got us into the position we're in. Honestly, it's not much more stupid than blaming the lack of a public option on the Democrats, and that's been "common knowledge" on the Left for years now.

And while Jill Stein isn't the only thing we can point to as a reason Hillary didn't win, she is definitely A reason. If the Green Party hadn't run a candidate at all -- or even better, the Green Party spokesman had done the responsible thing and endorsed Hillary -- maybe, just maybe, enough of those Green Party voters would have instead pushed Hillary to victory.

In any event, Jill Stein has a larger claim to causing actual real-world harm than Richard Spencer does.

Jeriko-1 - 2017-02-09
I always thought Waugh was like a troll account but here he is with his fucking Chair of Truth(tm).

I am regretful to have doubted you, Waugh.

Gmork - 2017-02-09
Waugh is almost developing a personality. This is the first time I've seen him act like anything but a one dimensional run-of-the-mill shitposter with an ego trip.

Bort - 2017-02-09
I'm surprised too. Apparently he's got the same nagging guilt that all the other Purity Ponies on the Left are starting to feel, that they could have stopped Trump but chose not to. That arguably makes him worse than Trump voters, who have shitty principles but at least they act in a fashion true to them.

Waugh - 2017-02-10
you and your kind's self-serious debates on here make me want to puke, bort. you all look like bill maher cosplay seated around a playground merry-go-round. your opinions are the most banal, neckbeard-stroking horseshit and - you can make all the excuses about chat cabal you want - this is why you weren't tolerated anymore at the news forums. you aren't informative, you aren't even amusing. this is the fucking kiddie table. and i am not stooping to engage you in anything resembling a level discussion. eat shit.

Waugh - 2017-02-10
btw there's no such thing as The Left in america. get the fuck out of the house.

Bort - 2017-02-10
Yeah, I thought I struck a nerve.

Hey Waugh ... ? When you sat out the election, or voted for Jill Stein or Pinkie Pie or whatever, that was not the miscalculation of an intelligent man. That was the perfectly mundane idiocy of a very ordinary, unremarkable mind. People who say "the Democrats and Republicans are all the same, maaaaan" are a dime a dozen, all looking for some way to stand out as smarter than the crowd on a limited intellect.

Pillager - 2017-02-10

"The Nation: What were the things that you saw in 2010 and 2014 that the rest of us missed?

McAlevey: That we were getting creamed in every statehouse midterm election. That we couldn’t get rid of [Wisconsin Governor] Scott Walker. We literally launched a recall; he won it. He ran again; he won it. [Illinois Governor Bruce] Rauner won. In Michigan, the unions put [a measure on the ballot] to enshrine collective bargaining in the Michigan Constitution. These were ballot initiatives—not surveys, not opinion polls. In the heartland of the United Auto Workers, we couldn’t win over most union households to vote for collective bargaining. Then, in Wisconsin, we couldn’t win over the union households we needed to get rid of the worst antiunion governor in modern times. Those are pretty big indicators we were losing the Rust Belt."

I feel absolutely no guilt in abandoning Clinton to her fate. Both she & her annoying followers have not accepted the blame for running the most incompetent campaign in modern memory.

BTW, If the Dems want to start speaking to the working class in a civil manner, that would be lovely. Else, brace yourself for Trump's second term.

Gmork - 2017-02-10
