One punch man: I thought the 1st few episodes were really strong, but then it turned into a sincere example of the very thing it started out parodying. It was still enjoyable tho. I did end up watching it all.

The show's signature joke was unsustainable, and by the end the premise has worn pretty thin. Most episodes just boil down to the writers finding various ways to draw things out so Saitama can't throw a punch for 20 minutes. And by the end they give up and just introduce a bad guy who can take multiple punches.

That said, it's still pretty clever, and I like that the major conflict isn't hero VS villain, it's hero VS his own mediocrity as a person.

I thought the story was adapted from the manga?

It started out as a webcomic, the webcomic got popular enough to be redrawn as a published manga, the published manga was made into an anime. Each iteration changed a couple of things here and there.

I think the underlying conflict in OPM is increasingly Saitama and the Hero Association. More broadly, it's about how this ranking and popularity system leads to people only worried about ranks and popularity. Which I suspect is a meta comment given how often you see character rankings crop up on shonen manga.

Finally, if anyone here likes one Punch Man, it's worth checking out Mob Psycho 100.

It starts off as one joke where an unstoppable hero stumbles in the way of cliched supervillians. After that joke wears thin it becomes a morality play about pride. Everyone in the Hero's Guild gets bogged down with matching up classes, rankings and raw numbers, save for this one guy who became the best simply for the hell of it. The other heroes lose because they are up their asses with their own sense of self importance as defined by their power levels. Saitama, untainted by pride, always wins.

The exception being Mumen Rider, who's just a normal man with a bike, and everyone loves him.

So it's Lord of the Rings and Frodo has a super punch.

I was wondering how they could handle Saitama. In fact, I didn't actually think they could manage it.

This works perfectly.
