Define racist.

Depending on how you look at it, the best or worst thing about Will is what a coward he is. An advantage I have above him is that I'm not afraid to be proven wrong, or embarrassed. I'm not afraid to change my opinion when somebody puts forth evidence.

This is why racism is becoming so popular, I know you guys can't see it because you're blinded by hatred, but what you're doing is not proactive, sorry.

Racism is the biologically deterministic ideological belief that certain "races" are organically superior to other "races" according to whatever metrics the particular flavor of racism has adopted. It's easily countered by two simple facts:


1 - "race" does not exist in an organic, physical sense. The genetic differences between the so-called "races" are about as minimal as the genetic differences that determine hair color

2 - biological determinism is not a scientifically valid model of the physical world.


Actual racism* is fairly rare, but bigotry ("I don't like ____ people because I don't!") is about as common as anything, across ethnic, class, sex, gender and political lines. A lot of dialogue would go a lot better if people actually understood the difference, instead of equivocating between, say, someone who is uncomfortable around Koreans because they grew up in a family that was uncomfortable around Koreans and someone who believes Koreans are a biologically inferior, subhuman species and has devoted their life to expounding pseudoscientific theories to support that belief. Bigotry and racism are related but they aren't the same thing, and neither necessarily puts a person beyond hope. Hell, one of the most progressive people I know was a pretty serious neonazi skinhead for a decade, before he read the sermon on the mount in his early 20s and had some kind of epiphany (although he didn't become Christian or anything).


Of course there's also the third category, people who espouse racist ideas they probably don't even believe themselves to get attention on the Internet.

I have as wonderful book written by a fellow countryman, Friedrich Gerstacker, called Wild Sports. In it, he describes coming to America in 1837 to explore the new world. I quote

" A great number of emigrants arrived around this time and filled all the taverns. I discovered that the Americans did not seem to care so much about foreigners as I had imagined; to my great vexation, I saw that Germans and Irish were thought little more of than Negros".

Because of course in 1827, being white meant being English. If you are of German or Irish descent, you were not considered "white" until quite recently. Italians "became" white even later.

I suspect you believe yourself to be white, but unless you can trace your lineage directly to England, you are a mud race by all but the most recent standards. So which mud race are you?

But to your question, no there is no "gay gene" as such. However, there is a universally accepted definition of what gay is, and the rate of homosexuality hovers around 2% ( hard to measure exactly given the nature of the thing being measured ).

White on the other hand, lacks any agreed upon standard, has no biological basis, and as such no percentage of the population can be ascertained. So if you are comparing the two, gay is on much firmer ground.

Right...I can trace my heritage half of my heritage directly to England and the founding stock, the other half of my ancestors came from Sweden by way of Liverpool and refused to teach their kids Swedish when they emigrated because they were so proud to be Americans. They're buried in Kiron, Iowa, a small Swedish community of about 200 (coincidentally in Rep. Steve King's domain). If you look up that town today, you'll see the resident's last names are all Swedish.

Whiteness is pretty clearly cultural. Do you think homosexuality is cultural? Not just the rate at which it happens, but the generation of it in and of itself.

Just because some nuts half-ironically think that Italians and Irish still aren't white doesn't mean everybody does. Do you think Africans and Asians have a tough time telling us from them? Do you think Asians look white? We're talking about Europeans here, that point is daft.

Are we? I thought we were talking about whites. I am also 1/4 Italian, and in autumn after summering outside, I am readily accepted as Latino ( when I lived in brooklyn the locals in my nabe all addressed me in spanish ). In spring, I change to honky again. Many southern Italians are indistinguishable from native americans. Remember the crying indian from the 70's PSA's about pollution? That cat was a pure bred wop.

But now you are moving the goalposts, talking about culture rather than race. Lumping all Europeans together as if they were one culture? Do you even _know_ anyone from those countries? The question I would have for LC is not WHAT is white, but WHEN is white? All of the arguments (biological or cultural) that could be used to defend the racist stance he seems to think is noble run into problems when you ask them about history. When, either in terms of evolutionary ("deep") time or historical time is the period in which some group you are going to call "whites" or "blacks" or "asians" were so isolated, not only from other "races" but from any other group that was isolated from other "races" so as to develop such distinct characteristics as to make them definitely, qualitatively superior or inferior to one another? We must be clear to separate this mythic "pure" time from the later time, the exercise of military or political power or hegemony over one another, which does not demonstrate the superiority of one group, it merely demonstrates the reason for the assumption of superiority. That mythic tiime doesn't exist except for the most isolated peoples on earth, and even they were never completely isolated. Race is a myth of the modern world, and it seeks to explain modern situations. Non-whites are inferior to whites, in the view of racists, because that is the only way of justifying what particular political groups have chosen to do to others.

He's a snooze alright. But he wrote genre fiction, not literature. I like some of his ideas, but the actual writing was pretty weak. I googled around a bit and indeed, HP was quite the racist and antisemite. This despite his wife being jewish. Something to think about when Donald waves his jewish inlaws around to prove how much he luuuuvs the jewwwwssss!

His writing is stiff but he did come up with some ideas that took on a life of their own; much like the Bible has developed a huge base of devoted fan fiction writers.

Lovecraft's prose is stilted and he tends to overuse judgemental adjectives inappropriately like "his evil malignant left finger" or "the foreboding and lurid perverted stop sign at the end of the horrid street made of nightmarish and devilish concrete."

But then again in those days you got paid by the word so EH, it's a living.

I've heard a lot of talk about him changing a lot of his racist opinions in the last few years of his life but I've never cared enough to find out if it's true.

Are any writers NOT paid by the word? The only times I've been paid for fiction (very few times indeed) it was by the word.
