This is an example of why its precarious to base your livelihood completely on some service. Eg. Paypal have been known to freeze accounts, just keep all your money with no explanation, and they dont legally need to give one.

When you rely on these services you are putting yourself under their power with no recourse or rights. The problem is private that services like gmail, facebook, youtube, paypal and so on are becoming essential services, and they are almost completely unregulated.
you could imagine in countries that have their society reasonably well organised (like the Netherlands) they might consider creating a public version of these sort of services.

Yeah, There's been a rash of it this week, I don't really pay much attention to Youtube personalities but from what I've picked up, in the wake of the whole "high profile gaming channels getting called out for cryptoracist opinions" thing and the subsequent pulling of ads by a bunch of major corporate advertisers, there's been a bit of a feeding frenzy of:

A) companies pulling frivolous shit against Youtubers they don't like (Kellogs is now suing Jim Sterling for having a cornflakes box visible in a few videos, for example), knowing Youtube is so cowed over the whole ad boycott that they're even more likely to capitulate than they already were.

B) complete fabrications like this just to stir up outrage and sell papers/get clicks.



And as dumb as a lot of the stuff on Youtube is, because they've set themselves up as a service where people can and do make a living, and those people's work is really the only thing that makes Youtube a viable business in any way, this becomes a workers' rights issue.

Anyhow, I think major sites like Youtube, all of Google's properties, Facebook, Twitter, etc. have become so tightly integrated into the social fabric that they should legally be public utilities (as should ISPs and the internet infrastructure itself, of course).

Joerg and people like his are the source of value for Youtube and yet they have absolutely no protection or rights as workers. Much like, say Uber drivers, but it gets even less attention because most people still don't recognize it as legitimate work.

You can say that about anyone that owns a business that offers you a job. It always comes off as an expedient defense of oligarchy against an individual you feel superior too. Appeal to corporate masters seems like a conversation killer, rather than an argument.

Funny how I can say, "I wouldn't blame a company fir not wanting to host instructional videos on crafting homemade weapons" and the internet hears, "I'm ignorant to the exploitation of contract and commission workers."
