I just saw this big fat bee outside! She was working on the flowers in the backyard, and then she went to sit down on a leaf, but it couldn't hold her weight. It gave way and she fell because she is the fattest fuzziest bee. But she was fine and then she made her way to more flowers. She works hard!

Nice things are nice!

Bees rule.

I once saw a praying mantis eating a bumble bee. it started by shaving its big bumble butt with its mandibles, which took ages - meanwhile the bee was just buzzing its wings in futility. nature is rough.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-12

Yeah, despite my love for this video I suspect that the bee here is probably dying. Its posture is not quite right.

He flew off soon after our bonding moment. Perhaps he was saying goodbye.

Sometimes bees get disoriented and lost, you can give them sugar water in a spoon to help.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-14

Jang, I'm glad to hear that. The way he was kind of leaning over like that made me think he might have been on the way out from natural causes.

One of the best things about growing bitter melons was getting about 100 bumblebees in the same area every morning. Most of them just chilled in their own flower, but once in a while, there'd be two battling it out around the stamens.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-13

I don't think I've seen more than a dozen bumble bees in any given year since the 90s, they've really bee decimated over the last 15-20 years and are already extinct in some parts of the US.

When I walk around the building at work, I see a few playing in the little white roses, but hmm... never more than a few at a time, now that I think about it.

I don't know what it is about bitter melon flowers. 7:30 every morning, without fail, the bees looked like they were drunk on them.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-14

I saw a lot more of them than I had in years last summer so I eventually checked online to see if they were making a comeback, but it turned out they were in worse shape than ever and it pretty much ruined my day.

What do you do with bitter melons? I've never been able to bring myself to get one.

BEEESSSS!!!!

jfcaron_ca - 2017-05-14

I had some kind of bitter melon dim sum. Speaking as a gwailo that normally loves dim sum, it was the worst-tasting chinese thing I've ever eaten.

il fiore bel - 2017-05-15

With bitter melons, you can put them in a stew.......... but I warn you, cooked, it tastes the way nail polish remover smells. There should be several Asian recipes that have them.

Sometimes I'll chop them up raw with some tomatoes and mix them with some fish sauce and rice vinegar. It's oddly refreshing as a small side.

As a medicinal item, I don't recommend eating the bitter melon if you suffer from low blood sugar. Also, don't eat the seeds unless you have a violent barfing fetish.

Stir-fry bitter melon slices with beef in black bean sauce on a bed of rice is a pretty common and tasty home-style Cantonese dish.

The Mothership - 2017-05-13

Poor bee.

The Mothership - 2017-05-13

Also, this is technically Bee Dap.

The world needs to see this.

I can see the string.

This... means something. This is significant.
