Jerry Lewis is a horrible and undoubtedly so is this movie. Five for the Pull-over.

Maggot Brain - 2017-07-27

Somewhere in my notes I wrote treatment for "The Day The Clown Cried." It's mostly Jerry Lewis getting beat up and thrown off trains.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-07-27

Was this guy ever funny? Anything I've seen of him paints him as having the persona of an extremely dull and orthodox priest.

In an interview he says that Joan Rivers made a joke about him and he literally sent her a real death threat. Did not seem to be joking. He also said he had never met her.

Him on the Joan Rivers show in 1968. He is incredibly boring.

I dunno anything about Joan Rivers either but she seems to be good craic

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-27

The title of this video isn't really a fair characterization of what's going on here. This clip isn't about Jerry Lewis having problems with women.

He clearly has problems with gay men, too.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-07-27

Can someone name some good/genuinely funny female comediennes? I'm not saying they don't exist or anything, I'm earnestly asking for recommendations in the most polite way possible, because I originally typed: "Oh come on Jerry what about..." and then I completely drew a blank.

All the super famous ones I can think of (Roseanne Barr, Kathy Griffin, Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer, Samantha Bee, Rosie O'Donnell, Lisa Lampanelli, Ellen DeGeneres, to name a few) just aren't funny. That's not to say they are void of talent or unlikable human beings or anything. They just suck at being funny.

And to be fair just in case someone misinterprets this comment, 97% of male comedians aren't funny either. But at least I can think of some that are.

Baron_Von_Bad_Beaver - 2017-07-27

Maria Bamford.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-07-27

Kristen Schaal.

Xenocide - 2017-07-27

Jessica Williams, Amy Pohler, and personally I find about half the women you listed funny so I'm counting them too.

The problem is that humor is subjective, so any name you list is going to be met with sincere disagreement from someone. So it's impossible to compile a list of funny women that everyone can agree on. But no one ever asks people to prove men can be funny by listing off names, so even though men would logically run into that same problem, they hardly ever do.

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-27

Laura Silverman is far funnier than Sarah.

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-27

But yeah, related to Xenocide's point, the fact is the majority of A list comedians are just MOR bland regardless of sex, gender or ethnicity. THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE BROAD APPEAL.

M-DEEM - 2017-07-28

Hillary Clinton

BAM!

Like stand up funny? Bamford for sure. Kate Mckinnon is pretty funny

StanleyPain - 2017-07-28

Most mainstream female comics are terrible, but they are the few who managed to get to that point. Most local comedy scenes usually have a lot of great women comics who have to languish in limbo waiting for organizers and such to actually give them a legit chance at the stage.

poorwill - 2017-07-28

just saying maria bamford again. she's really good.

TeenerTot - 2017-07-28

I like Tina Fey.

Bort - 2017-07-28

Yes on Maria Bamford.

As Patton Oswalt once observed, it's nearly impossible to rip off her material, because to deliver it you need to be able to do voices like her.

Joy Whack-a-Mole is a good turn of phrase:

boner - 2017-07-28

Jen Kirkman, for fucks sake

Bort - 2017-07-28

Also Jen Kirkman, yes!

somedongus - 2017-07-27

Your mother.

Xenocide - 2017-07-27

You'll have to forgive Jerry, he's just a product of his era. He came of age during Steampunk Times, when people believed that if a woman told jokes, her boobs fell off and her fun-fun zone went all dry. Also there were zepplins and giant gears all over the place.

SolRo - 2017-07-28

It has been thoroughly proven by the latest phrenology research that women have humor head lumps so small as to make them incapable of producing comedy.

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-07-28

Give the guy a fucking break, he's like 200 years old. Do you honestly believe he even knows where he is right now?

When you're 200, you can say whatever the fuck you want about anyone.

Spit Spingola - 2017-07-28

He doesn't like it when they aren't NICE LAAAADIES!!!

chumbucket - 2017-07-28

I heard that in my head too.

Poor old, sad clown.

StanleyPain - 2017-07-28

60s-era comedy for the most part was such complete trash. Totally a relic of its era and doesn't stand up at all these days. Lewis owes everything to the age in which he was born, cuz he's about as funny as rectal cancer, the piece of shit. He's also infamously a complete asshole in real life which apparently stems from his insecurity issues from having to play second fiddle to Dean Martin for so long, who by all accounts was at least a somewhat more amicable person in real life. Yeah he's old now, but his garbage attitudes have been around for decades.

Nominal - 2017-07-28

I'd go so far as to say that all comedy from around the late 30s to early 70s has aged terribly. You see any movie from that time on an AFI top 100 comedies list and you cringe.

Anaxagoras - 2017-07-28

*Almost* all comedy.

Charlie Chaplin's stuff holds up. (The Great Dictator, for example, is still awesome.) Buster Keaton is still good, although a little before your stated time frame. Umm.... some of the Smucker Brothers stuff is alright. Of course there's Mel Brooks.... although a lot of his stuff has aged surprisingly badly.

MyNameIsUnimportant - 2017-07-28

Well, with a name like Smuckers, it HAS to be good.

Anaxagoras - 2017-07-28

Whoops. I meant Smothers Brothers.

garcet71283 - 2017-07-28

Marx Brothers, Red Skelton, Sid Caesar, Peter Sellers, Woody Allen...

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-07-28

MONTY PYTHON

cognitivedissonance - 2017-07-28

I tried watching The Pink Panther not long ago and iiiiiiiiiiiittttttyt iiiiiiiiiissssssssss sssssssssssssssssssooooooooooooooooooo ssssssssssslllllllllllloooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww. You hit the random music number sequence that doesn't further the plot in any way and you want to die.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-28

Peter Sellers DOCTOR STRANGELOVE.

Still, as overstated as Nominal assessment was, let's not lose the larger point. Shitty comedies were the standard. Offhand, I can't even think of a comedy from the fifties, even a bad one.

garcet71283 - 2017-07-30

Some Like it Hot

mashedtater - 2017-07-31

I missed reading comments like this

Nominal - 2021-05-14

3 people over a course of 35 years, and a comedy troupe from across the Atlantic. Yes, my point is complete undone.

(Some Like it Hot is literally the most overrated comedy of all time)

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-28

OH, LADY!!! HEY, LADY!!! LADY!!!

FUCK YOU, LADY!
