Well, he voted to allow debate. I'm not sure he'd actually vote to pass the bill.
I have to withhold judgement until then.

Don't give him that much: during the Obama years, McCain was voting to filibuster (read: bring bills to a grinding halt) on a regular, ongoing basis. If he's voting to allow debate to continue on this, it's not a principled stand about proper Senate functioning.

Killer Joe - 2017-07-26

After he said he wouldn't vote for the bill in it's current form, he voted for the bill in it's current form.
Judge away.

McCain will always complain about how much he disagreed with what he just did.

TeenerTot - 2017-07-27

That sonofabitch.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-07-28

For the record, McCain just voted 'no' to the repeal.

Stars for Teener.

Credit to McCain for surprising me and doing the right thing.

I wonder if he realized he was making himself one of the most hated people in America. It's one thing to present yourself as "The Maverick" and then be an obedient Republican when nobody's paying attention, but what if the whole country sees what you're doing and is calling you out on it?

Killer Joe - 2017-07-28

He stopped the final 'skinny repeal', which at best, was an awful idea that nobody liked (outside republicans desperate for a win, and even then it was just to get something, anything back to the other side of congress) and at worst was a parliamentary clusterfuck of a hail Mary right up there with the sequester lo those many years ago.

When Ted Kennedy was dying of cancer, he made it to the Senate chamber to cast his vote in favor of Obamacare.

Anyone who still wants to claim there's no meaningful differences between the Democrats and Republicans, take a look at what they'll risk their health to do.

b-b-but Hillary is a GLOBALIST!

Also the senator who came to help break the filibuster for the 1964 civil rights act.

"On June 10, 1964, during the roll call for the historic, successful effort to break the filibuster on what would become the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when the clerk reached "Mr. Engle," there was no reply. The tumor had robbed Engle of his ability to speak. Slowly lifting an arm, he pointed to his eye, thereby signaling his affirmative vote ("aye"). The cloture vote was 71-29, four votes more than the two thirds required to end the filibuster. Nine days later, the Senate approved the Act itself."

Not enough fuck you's in the world for hip cynics who think there's no difference between that and republicans.

Raggamuffin - 2017-07-27

Also, when you hear about Democrat brass well-wishing John McCain, remember when republicans were openly hoping for Sen. Byrd's death so that he wouldn't be able to vote for Obamacare.

Bort - 2017-07-27

To the Republicans' credit, in 1964 an overwhelming majority of them (80%+) supported the Civil Rights Act.

But every last one of them is dead and we're dealing with their successors now, who exemplify every vice to be found in our system. If they aren't evil (however ill-defined the term may be), nobody is.
