I googled this, and as far as I can tell that's actually how the movie ends. And the only reason it takes place in the 60's is so they could say that Buster would get out of prison in 1988, the same year the movie came out. Apparently this was their big selling point?

This is based on a true story. Back in 1963 a bunch of men robbed a Royal Mail train and made off with almost £3million. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Train_Robbery_(1963)

If you're into punk, you may have heard of another participant, Ronnie Biggs. He escaped prison and lived for 30 years in Brazil. He's a bit of a folk hero.

You can't really spoil it, because anyone from Britain would be familiar with the story.
