As someone that's borderline pacifist, on a personal level, it's pretty hard to admit that some ideologies and groups can't be coexisted with peacefully, because their whole ideology is based on wiping out everyone else that isn't like them.

Re-watching some of that old WWII defense department films, particularly the Why We Fight series and the others done by the big-name Hollywood directors (ok, I'll admit, I recently watched that Netflix series about this), I'm struck by how similar a lot of the arguments by the isolationists and the 'punching nazis is wrong guys' types today actually are.

This spiral into violence has been a completely co-dependent act by both sides, and you're only fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

I number among them, to the extent that I don't believe in punching people merely for declaring themselves to be Nazis. This is not to say that there is no point at which punching them becomes appropriate and even necessary; I just set the bar a little higher than declaring allegiance / mouthing odious dogma.

That isn't about abstract principles; it's about standards I want applied to others as well. Consider a black person who, frustrated by the latest act of police brutality, mutters "all white people need to die". Does he deserve a punch in the face? I get that momentary frustration and white supremacist ideology aren't the same thing, but if that's what separates the two then we're in the uneasy position of determining a person's "true" feelings as a guide to whether punching is appropriate.

All of that said, I will admit to contemplating white supremacist rallies and how entertaining they would become with just a little bit of napalm. (Which I would not actually do, but see above about broadly-applicable standards.)

If only there were some way to determine if Nazis will resort to violence when they aren't being threatened. If only there were some test case, where, I don't know, maybe a bunch of protestors were marching peacefully, and some guy was in a car, a vehicle in which he'd be totally safe from unarmed marchers, when he suddenly decided to plow into them.

If that happened, it would certainly prove that this "co-dependent violence" theory is absolute horseshit, since only a cosmic shithead would think that marching with a sign is "violence" equal to murdering someone in a hit-and-run.
