Yeah, this showed before BR2049 and I just was like....meh. I wasn't some huge fan of the first one, but it's like the sequel fell down the sequel-itis/trope tree and hit every single branch on the way down.
It seems like it doesn't really have he same Del Toro-esque character that the first one had.
The first one was pretty self-aware and that made it a decent film. It was Del Toro's love letter to the Japanese kaiju genre, more or less. Also it had Ron Perlman.
The original sucked. They took what should have been a dumb fun concept and made it so damn dour, mixed in with wacky Transformers bits with Charlie Day.
This one looks better on account of actually taking place at day and not constant DARK DARK DOUR DARK night.
