Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-11-25
I just saw American Movie a couple days ago after hearing about it for the 1st time here.
One thing that made it interesting imo is that Mark does *not* seem to be exhibiting the Dunning-Kruger effect, as a lot of poeple in that situation seem to do.
He never goes on about his 'work' using overwrought language, or how he's a great artist, and so on. He just really likes movies and is compelled to make them.
I dont know about these things, but, he seems quite skilled. When they show bits of 'Coven' at the end I was blown away, it looked good! Based on the rest of the film I was half expecting a total mess. Considering the tiny budget and general chaos + the amount of time it took the end result is really impressive.
Also he has ideals or interesting preferences, this concept of 'realness' in cinema. He's drawn to gritty grainy stuff like night of the living dead and dislikes the bland perfection of Hollywood films. I admire that.
...
After watching it I looked him up on imdb. I was really happy to learn he has continued to direct a couple films up to the present day and has acted in loads!

infinite zest - 2017-11-25 Mark's daughter worked at the Oriental Theatre in Milwaukee the same time I did, so I'd see him a lot and we'd talk about movies and shit out in the lobby. I'd seen American Movie about 6 years prior to working there so I knew who he was, but I don't think he brought it up once. Besides you fine folk on here, he's one of the coolest, most knowledgeable and modest people to talk film with.

Cena_mark - 2017-11-26 The DVD is excellent, it has deleted scenes and Coven in it's entirety.

yogarfield - 2017-11-26 I wouldn't say he's skilled. Some people have drive that outpaces their talent. Sometimes that drive is more important.
