Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2018-01-02 @meme. ITER construction started in 2013. Its at the forefront the huge stalled technology path.
I'm assuming Redford is saying that work on ARC, SPARC or something similar has begun. I cant find any details though.

memedumpster - 2018-01-03 I apologize, this was the only one I knew about.

So does he ever cover the problem of radiation generated by fusion being so intense that it destroys the reactor from the inside?
|
Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2018-01-02 Theyve designed the superconducting coils so they can be taken apart. So the top can be taken off the reactor and the inner torus, which gets fucked up by neutrons, can be replaced as one component every year say.
Currently the inner surface of tokamaks has to be replaced from the inside (in a vaccum) piece by piece like a ship in a bottle.
Also instead of the ultra-complex 'blanket' inner surface component, their design just surrounds the inner torus with coolant. It acts as a neutron shield + also the neutrons heat it up and thats how the electricity is generated, just like a fission breeder reactor. Coolant is cycled off to a steam plant.
