And I agree-- that episode was wonderful. The show is so much more than just dumb laughs, which it has plenty of, too. It's really a fantastic show.

ps. Its a reasonably topical show + the main character is based on Bill Cosby. What did they do when all the Cosby rapey stuff came out?

Bojack isn't based on Cosby, as Cosby remained popular right up until the scandal broke. Bojack's starting point is that he's a has-been who has had no success since his sitcom was cancelled 20 years ago.

That said, they do an excellent episode about sex assault scandals in the second season (which was written in 2014 but really feels like it could have been based on news from a few months ago) but the perpetrator isn't Bojack.

Anyway, this show does have an inconsistent first season but it's amazing how much it improves after that. Once the writers realize that the show has better things to do than make celebrity jokes, it really comes into its own.

They actually have an episode where Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter fight over his idol, Hank Hippopopalous, who is exactly like Cosby. Diane gets angry because Mr. Peanutbutter wants to overlook the fact that he/Cosby is most likely a rapist and he doesn't want to believe the women coming forward. The show is really pretty good at responding to all the shit that goes down in Hollywood so it will be really interesting to see how the respond to the #metoo movement.

And yes the show gets way, way better after season 1. Bojack is based supposedly on both Bob Saget and Matthew Perry. Mr. Peanutbutter is based loosely on Dave Coulier and Sarah Lynn is based upon Jodie Sweetin of Full House.

It gets better but also much darker, which can be better depending on where you sit.

it's good, way better than i expected (i had to kinda force myself through the early episodes) but it is misery porn to a large degree. they seem aware of this and try to keep the todd stuff light but it even encroaches there like a settling blob (to decent effect mind)
