Couldn't the worms just bury themselves deeper and go under the mess?

And the guns would be more useful in that case how?

Well we've seen that they are vulnerable in their mouths and can be killed with bullets, even though they have tough skins. But since they tend only to be killable when they pop up out of the ground, I think shooting them is one of the better options. Dynamite is messy and there's less of a guarantee their heads will be targeted, smooshing them to the point where they can't recover.

But I don't think guns are the only answer. We need vast amounts of sulfuric acid to combat these things, or possibly liquid nitrogen.
