I actually liked the seinfeld finale. I thought the whole point of the show was that these characters were unable to grow or progress. This seemed like a fitting conclusion, and while yes, it was a clips episode, I enjoyed the review of the large number of transient but interesting characters.
I agree, it was about as good as it could have been.
It seems the curse of sitcoms to not be able to end on a note that everyone will appreciate. Endings often are seen as sad, which runs in opposition to a sitcom. The only appropriate way to end a sitcom is on a joke. Seinfeld did this by finally giving the everyone what they deserved, and their reactions being totally neutral to the whole situation as if nothing changed. Another good example would be The Bob Newhart show, which declared that the entire show as a joke from another Bob Newhart show.
"these characters were unable to grow or progress."
So like Jerry himself.
