From the video's description:

I don't hate gays. I am in fact bicurious myself, and it has not been easy within the culture I have been raised. The 2016 video circulating was a satirical shitpost made in bad tastes and I never intended for it go public. I have Asperger's and Bipolar disorder so my sense of humour and empathy for people is often very muddled. It's a condition I've struggled with for many years as an artist who feels passionately about things and who faces the public eye every hour of my life. The internet has taken the video very far out of context and proportion, but I am very sorry to the people who I the video has hurt or confused.

Basically it's the "some of my best friends are X" excuse but more narcissistic. So, it's basically the "some of my best selves are X" excuse.

I like this guy's music, but I knew this moment was coming from years back when he had since-deleted posts and videos where he went off on a weird MRA/pro-Gamergate tangent and talked about how women are basically asking for harassment etc. He brushed it all under the rug as best as possible because, at the time, he was getting serious job offers and he knew doubling down on it would probably fuck up his career (sort of like how changed from Faggotron to Pogo for similar reasons and took most of hid older, goofier music off of Last.fm). It's possible that, yes, he has a strange sense of "humor", but he's also said a lot of really wonky shit that will probably come back to haunt him.

Bear in mind that he’s still forbidden from entering the United States, where those job offers were. I had considered the angle of pandering to the Right to make himself a cause to get that rescinded by the Trump administration, but then he pulled back on that, and I don’t know what to think.

Get some meds, bro.

oh look a star trek fan with problematic behavior
Anaxagoras - 2018-06-01
Yeah, what's up with that? I mean, Kirk was a misogynist asshole, but TNG was fairly progressive... as long as you overlook Deanna Troi and her Cleavage of Doom (tm).

cognitivedissonance - 2018-06-01
Kirk was a representation of divine rule.

i wonder if they've done a study on the comorbidity of owning a replica phaser and pedophilia

Yeah, I love Star Trek but Gene Roddenberry was a dogshit human being who sexually harassed/abused cast members and wrote sexist scripts. That Black Mirror episode was dead on when it comes to some Star Trek fans.

I've also noticed that there's a contingent among people who love old film, music and other media who think everything was better back then and hate the cultural change we've had in the last decade or two.

Ugh - 2018-06-03
it's funny regarding gene's bad behavior, i just watched the "toys that made us" episode on star trek and it was nothing but praise for his progressive values

i get it's a lighthearted program but if you're gonna stress his moral compass you may want to just stay vague on the subject at most

You know, I am actually having a really visceral reaction to this. I think it might be the first time I've ever really been disappointed by a public figure that I actually liked.

Roseanne was always crazy so none of that shit is a shocker.

For me it was Kevin Spacey

Ignorant people, or poorly-socialized people, or badly-intentioned people, sometimes have brilliant skills and make things we like.

We used to say "never meet your ur heroes." That was good advice.

His desire to get a rise out of oversensitive liberals will be responsible for him losing his platform altogether. He has NO idea how bad this is for him. Disney will cut him off and no one will hire him. So he wanted to get to people so that he could feel smug not letting anything get to him and now he's going to lose everything and he'll probably wind up letting everything get to him.
