I had a absolutely massive Chinese food me last night with undoubtably stellar amounts of MSG and I will attest it does make me feel like I could take the deepest nap in the world for about 30 minutes after I eat, but after that I'm back.

No opinion on MSG one way or the other as I don’t think it’s dangerous but I also have never tasted identical dishes made with and without MSG to declare it definitively ‘makes food delicious’

Supposedly MSG was originally marketed as a low-sodium alternative to table salt. 30 mg of sodium in a 0.5 gram serving of MSG, versus 190 mg for salt.
I have a barely-used shaker of Accent sitting in my cupboard. I bought it after I found out that it's pure MSG and I was curious to see what it actually tasted like on its own. It's has a strange brothy flavor to it, which would make sense because broths and stocks naturally contain lots of glutamate. I've yet to actually use it in cooking, though.

betabox - 2018-08-19 You should use it more. It makes many foods tastier. Plus, it pisses certain people off for no good reason which actually adds to the dining experience.
