I saw them on this tour at a junkyard in Phoenix. On acid.
It was a transformative experience, to say the least.

Old_Zircon - 2018-12-17 Lucky.
One of my greatest regrets is not having been old enough to see them in their prime. I started listening to them intensely around 11 when a local stoner gave me cassette dubs of Brown Reason to Live, Locust Abortion Technician and Psychic.. Powerless... Another Man's Sac, but by the time I was old enough to even have a chance at going to a show they had been terrible for years.

Old_Zircon - 2018-12-17 The guy who gave me the tapes actually followed them on tour like a Deadhead during the Hairway to Steven tour, he was REALLY in to the Butthole Surfers. Giving me those tapes was one of the best favors anyone ever did for me.
|
Old_Zircon - 2018-12-17 I mean in terms of long term positive effects on my life. Because listening to a lot of prime Butthole Surfers in middle school made me a better person.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2018-12-18 Also they have a blue oyster cult symbol iggy on a piece of equipment. That means something, man.

Saw them 3 times in the mid-late 80's, the two shows at the original living room in Providence were fucking incredible, the parking lot was an unstoppable drug riot
|
Old_Zircon - 2018-12-17 I missed the original living room, but I actually played closing night at the second Living Room.
It was as underwhelming as it sounds.
|
love - 2018-12-17 the golden days for me were when the original Living Room, the original Lupo's and The Rocket/Babyhead were all going
|
love - 2018-12-17 Six finger satellite w/ Smashing Pumpkins at the Rocket (or babyhead I can't remember which name it had then) I think may be my #1 show ever.
|
Old_Zircon - 2018-12-17 Mine's probably a toss up between Sun City Girls playing for 3 hours at The Knitting Factory in NYC to an audience full of drunks who stumbled in from the poetry slam downstairs and didn't know what they were seeing, Nik Turner at Dusk in Providence a few years ago (as much because I hung out with him for about an hour before the show as for the show itself), or Spinal Tap at Great Woods in 1993.
Honorable mentions are Scratch Acid reunion tour, Link Wray on the Shadowman tour and Burt Jansch on his last solo tour.
Oh, and the Ricky Powell surprise DJ set at some bar in Boston in 2005 or 2006 was great, too.

Punk was so much better when bands were "punk" because they weren't like anyone else.
