Somehow after watching this I rabbit-holed to a Dune forum that mentioned ASEOGD, which I then found out meant All Seeing Eye Of God Dune, and googling THAT led me to this site...enjoy the crazy (sigh, sometimes I miss POEred)

Bryant Gumbel: SOOO, you're a fucking nerdlinger nerd that people think is a nerd and laughs at openly due to how much of a fucking geek you are and your whole genre is laughable kids toilet water meant for babies who hate thinking and/or sex, care to respond, you fucking dork?

blue vein steel - 2019-07-10

to be fair, the ultimate hero of the original series (his son's books are garbage) won basically because he's really good at sex.

I'm a big Dune nerd and i'mm looking forward to Villeneuve's take. As has been said many times before, Lynch got the look and feel of the Dune universe very right, but studio meddling (make it more Star Wars!), crappy special effects, and trying to cram 6 hours worth of plot into 2.5 hours... well, the results spoke for themselves.

Dune is best as a series not a summary.

Villeneuve needs to regain some economy he lost with Blade Runner else this overwritten bible analog with pulp flourish could be rendered more ponderously than Roddenberry's eleventy hour model flybys in Star Trek The Motion Picture.

I'm still a thousand percent in if they manage to get to 2/Messiah, the casting is great for the arc...but God Emperor is just gonna be nutso to pull off as one thing without fatigue/confusion/choppy logic to make GoT look elegantly unspooled.

Fingers crossed the Bene Gesserit TV spin off series - coming out with the movie - hits the same scissoring highs of Chapterhouse. Which is a legit thing according to imdb.

Science fiction has come a long, long way in the media. It gets WAY more respect than it used to. Battlestar Galactica was never nominated for best drama but it was the best series of the 00s decade in my opinion. I think Dune has a really good chance of being made into a really quality film series.

Bryan was saying what a lot of people were thinking back then, which was that scifi would always be marginalized as dismissable and not on par with "true" drama.

The Lynch version was classic but strayed from the book quite a lot, even though it was visually brilliant.

The Syfy Channel version was cheaply made and it showed. They had a few interesting standouts in acting. Ian McNeice was an AWESOME Baron Harkonnen. The actress playing Jessica did an okay job. The Children of Dune miniseries was just terrible, and did not do the books justice.

I'm really hoping Villaneuve pulls this off because I would love it if they could actually pull off a God Emperor of Dune movie eventually. I remember when I was reading the book, it gave me David Lynchian vibes from just how weird and cerebral it was, and I think that someone should take advantage of that some day.

My big hope for the new Dune movie is that they make Duke Leto a jerk and that they make Paul cry a lot while he's tripping balls, just like in the books.

Granted, I hope they get to God Emperor and Chapter House but I'm less excited about the prospects of a Messiah and Children of Dune movies. Either way they're going to have to do a ton of re-writes to turn Chapter House and God Emperor into movies; both of these books are like 75% people talking about a space wedding or space nuns doing space nun stuff. I mean, they could be really good movies, but it's a real tightrope walk.

My big concern for these movies is the ending; are they going to do the "book" ending where is was old robuts the whole time or are they going to write a new ending?

I never read the Brian Herbert books. Are they as awful as I imagine?

Frank died before writing the last Dune book. Brian wrote two sequels to finish the series but I didn't have the heart to read them. From what I understand, the Honored Matres were part of the Scattering of humans that left known space after Leto II died, and they were sort of like dominatrixes that could hypnotize dudes into giving them their space empires or somes ridiculous shit. Then the giant Terminator robots came back and that was when they made gholas out of all the main characters from the first few novels essentially making them all not dead anymore.

I just tell myself it all ended with a Big Bong.

They’re pretty bad, they basically turned the story into bad Action schlock. The one about Duncan is okay þough but they ruined my favorite side character, Count Ferning. At end of Dune Paul and him are cool but the next time we see him he’s trying to kill Paul- okay...

Don’t even get me started about all the clones of the fan favorites, the sad thing about that is that there is a set up for it in chapter house but it implied that the clone is going to be of Princess Irulan. A big chunk of that book is the sisterhood worrying about collapsing and realizing that they never bothered to write down their history and that the on sister that did anything close to writing down the history was Irulan, even though the sisterhood made fun of her for it at the time.

I'm sure Anderson is way more responsible for turning the prequels/sequels into Star Wars: EU books with Dune characters. Jr. just owns the IP and likes money, i doubt he did that much actual writing. I guess Jr. is ultimately responsible for the quality for giving Anderson writing duties, but there is plenty of blame to go around.
