It was jarring to see him go from liberal hippy to redneck asshole.

Cena_mark - 2020-07-08

Just like Boomers in general. Groovy in the 60s and 70s, curmudgeonly and hateful in their later years.

It only takes 20 years for a liberal to become a conservative without changing a single idea. -- Robert Anton Wilson

As a person born in the late 1950s, I've long ago stopped taking th narrative about boomers personally, but it's a false narrative.

For sure, Charlie Daniels used to be a whole lot cooler, but was he ever really a liberal? Remember this line? "I ain't asking nobody for nothin/ If I can't get it on my own." This is the sort of thing conservatives always like to talk about. I was in high school when that came out.

Maybe some people think Ted Nugent used to be liberal, because of the draft dodging, but in the 70s, he was arguing politics with a reporter from Rolling Stone by showing him literature by the NRA.

The truth is that a huge number of boomers were conservative all along, but in the sixties and seventies, the public face of the boomers was rock stars and college radicals. It's my anecdotal perception that most of these people have not changed sides, though some have probably mellowed. And today, the public face of the boomers isn't Crosby, Stills and Nash. It's politicians and business leaders.

I always talk about how I've never voted Republican, but my dirty little secret is that if I hadn't changed addresses abruptly in 1980, I would have probably voted for Reagan. My early flirtation with Libertarianism may have been overcome in part by the fact that I didn't become wealthy. And wealthy people have higher public profile, right?

I maintain that the generational narrative is 100 per cent perception. The reality is unknowable. It's certain that getting older makes you feel vulnerable and more afraid of where things are headed, but that's not generational, that's universal. If you live long enough, it will happen to you.

Compare the original "Uneasy Rider" to "Uneasy Rider '88."
