Every "moderate conservative" I know is real angry about riots and looting. All the young people I know seem at best sort of gloomily resigned to vote lesser evil. It doesn't seem like a good electoral mix to me.

I’m sure a small percentage are genuinely fooled in these kinds of situations, but the large majority are knowing participants who later deny it out of expedience.

The issue isn't really whether they were/are fooled; the issue is whether the truth matters to them at all. People with an authoritarian mindset don't care whether what they're being told passes a fact-check; it's their obligation to do as they're told, and that means accepting whatever "facts" they're supposed to.

Ideologues are similar except they are true believers in a philosophy or movement, and will likewise accept whatever "facts" are in service to their ideology. Fact-checking isn't necessary, and indeed could only get in the way.
