Darn those white women who care about stuff.

Gmork - 2020-08-30

Pretty sure that's not what a Karen is. Pretty sure it's about an overstepping of boundaries and attempt to assert their own authority / assuage their racist pearl-clutching assumptions about strangers they meet.

SolRo - 2020-08-30

They really care about making sure black people know their place and everyone else understands how important the Karen is.

Void 71 - 2020-08-31

The Karen meme is usually deployed by bourgeois whites to shame other bourgeois whites who voice their latent class and racial anxieties above a whisper. In that sense, it's pure projection.

It's ultimately a self-defeating meme because it antagonizes the largest constituency within the Democrat Party. If the Democrat Party loses middle-class white women, it loses the suburbs.

SolRo - 2020-08-31

Yeah, but you’re a racist idiot who doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about.

exy - 2020-08-31

What planet you from brah

Gmork - 2020-08-31

"The largest constituency of the Democratic party"

Uh. What?

You may consider actually meeting a Democrat in real life some time to disabuse you of that notion.

Void 71 - 2020-09-01

Half of white women vote Democrat, and they have the highest voter turnout rate within the Democrat Party. Seeing as how whites comprise roughly 64% of the population in America, that easily makes white women the largest constituency within the Democrat Party.

I would also argue that they're the most politically influential constituency within the party by virtue of where they live.

SolRo - 2020-09-01

Despite your conservative fantasy about all white Karen’s being racist Democrats, most aren’t. A lot them openly spouted their republican talking points during their moments of fame.

Void 71 - 2020-09-01

I would argue that any white person who pays a sizable premium to live in a majority white suburb does so primarily out of fear (latent or otherwise) of the racial other. They can say 'for the schools' until they run out of breath, but when they point at Karen, 3 fingers are pointing back at them.

Gmork - 2020-09-01

We've already established that you don't know what the term Karen means. No need to furnish us with more examples.

SolRo - 2020-09-01

Unfortunately the way America’s flawed school system is set up the vast majority of Public school quality is dependent on the local neighborhood property tax income. There’s a lot of racist and classist history behind that.

Would be nice if public schools were funded at a state or national level but the rich would never allow it.

simon666 - 2020-08-30

Now that I'm thinking about it this seems to be *more* of a class issue than a race issue; it seems to affect those with just enough economic standing to feel entitled, but who are on the deeply insecure about their class position. They're super stressed and full of anxiety from the rat race of trying to keep up with the Jones' and thus are super rigid, trying to keep things EXACTLY HOW THEY ARE NOW. They want things to be predictable, because it takes too much mental and emotional bandwidth to run the rat race when everything is changing around you (or at least is perceived to be changing around you).

Cena_mark - 2020-08-30

I hate the upper middle class. They act like they're rich, but they're so much closer to the service industry plebs they torture than to the truly rich people they idolize.

casualcollapse - 2020-08-30

Whatever Karen

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-08-31

Ok boomer

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-09-02

Calling the cops on black people for minor or imaginary crimes is very much a racial issue. Anything else is bullshit.

My only friend in the neighborhood is an older white lady who complains about the black family across the street letting their dog run loose, which is illegal and dangerous, probably mostly to the dog. He's a cute little part poodle and he doesn't seem threatening, and he's never come into her yard and I think she should mind her own business, but she is one of these sweet old ladies who drinks too much and feeds all the stray cats, and she is correct in that it is illegal and dangerous.

She has threatened to call animal control. Now you can call her a busy body or a Karen, or an upright bitch or whatever, but she's not threatening to call anyone who might shoot someone in the family if they get angry. (And she hasn't done it. I don't think she'd do anything that might harm the dog.)

"Karen" used to be about using the implied threat of deadly force against people of color, a very big deal, but then it became a meme, and it seems like now anyone can go viral with any video with any white woman complaining about anything.

simon666 - 2020-09-03

I don't think we're in disagreement, JHM. There is certainly a racism component at work that is pretty well intertwined with class issues, but my take is that in cases like this the racism finds a place to manifest in virtue of class insecurity/stress.

The point I was making was that if these people (Karnes) feel more secure in their class position (and or you increase the class/economic position of poc) you reduce the racism (as a set of practices, not a latent disposition to act/think in racist ways) more effectively. This is why I said "more of a class issue" so as not to gloss over the racism aspect.

Hazelnut - 2020-08-30

Words and labels matter. There's clearly a pattern of unforgiveably shitty behavior at play here, but I don't think "Karen" captures it well, and it brings in all these distracting overtones of gender and class until the next thing you know is everyone's arguing over the word instead of the behavior.

Maybe just turn it into a verb? Everyone please stop Karening.

Marlon Brawndo - 2020-08-31

4:00 made me laugh way too hard.
