What I thought was interesting about this set was that Burr's criticism of white women as "rolling around in the blood money" of white men during slavery was in line with the thesis of Stephanie E. Rogers-Jones's work They Were Her Property. Rogers-Jones's charge is actually much stronger: White women were indeed slave owners who ruled as viciously and brutally as white men, despite what is commonly assumed.

Let’s not assume a comedian still whining about ‘cancel culture’ is that much a deep thinker.

simon666 - 2020-10-17

You're going to have to say more, as there isn't much to work off of from your comment.

Also, I'm not saying there isn't room to criticize Burr here. I think there is.

Anaxagoras - 2020-10-17

Actually, he is a surprisingly deep thinker... if you can get over his high level of ignorance. (Which he himself readily admits.). And his complaints about cancel culture are pretty dead-on; he complains about the ridiculousness of many of the left's biggest complainers... criticisms which are 100% valid.

SolRo - 2020-10-18

Deep thinker in the vein of joe rogan...

Anaxagoras - 2020-10-18

Yeah, similar to Rogan actually, although Bill Burr's brain works a lot gooder. (IMO.)

Crackersmack - 2020-10-18

Sol is always bitter about Joe Rogan for some reason.

simon666 - 2020-10-18

Rogan shows a natural curiosity and interest in learning, but often can tell his ass from a hole in the ground.

SolRo - 2020-10-18

Burr has this aura of trying to be the smartest dumb person in the room, so he’s actually worse than rogan in that regard.

Nominal - 2020-10-18

You can only tack on "But I'm a moron; what do I know?" to the end of all your "the Left is the REAL problem" rants (with only the rarest, most indirect, mildest condemnations of Trumpism) before it loses its effectiveness as a free pass. He's actually worse than overt, full time Trumpee cock-holsters because he and his fans claim plausible deniability behind "Hey I'm just a pro free speech free-thinker!" crap.

He's every dirtbag moron Masshole Southie stereotype rolled into one.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-10-18

I've rather aggressively avoided learning anything about Joe Rogan.

No, Bill Burr's complaints about "cancel culture" are not dead on. out of a billion people on Twitter, there are probably a few people who really want to scrub all references to John Wayne from our culture because of his 1967 Playboy interview, and if I want to, I'll be able to use the search function to find all of them for my content hungry, Attention-starved blog to prove that "they're trying to cancel John Wayne. Three Tweets seems to be all it takes to prove something is a trend. I've seen three tweets used by pop culture blogs to prove that people hate Anne Hathaway, and that they don't think Jennifer Lawrence is adorkable any more.

Sometimes it seems like the internet is making people stupider, but its actually making stupid people louder. There's always someone to object to anything, but very few things are ever truly canceled, and CANCELL CULTURE has now been weaponized by the right to deflect criticism. So, yeah, that made me wince.

>> Sometimes it seems like the internet is making people stupider, but its actually making stupid people louder.

I knew there was something comin' that'd be worth my precious stars.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-10-19

Yup, JHM's take is a good one here, especially the bit about aggressively avoiding learning anything about Joe Rogan.

Pillager - 2020-10-17

Stunning and Brave.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-10-17

Bill Burr reminds me of Bernie Sanders, because I like him a lot more than I like his idiot fans. I think he's often wrong, but he's FUNNY! I don't think he's as funny as Patton Oswalt and John Mulaney, whose routines I can watch over and over, but he has great chops, and that covers a variety of sins.

I admired Burr's SNL routine right away. It was "politically incorrect" and "woke" at the same time. It turned "wokeness" onto itself, and that was interesting for its own sake. It was skillfull, and brave and funny.

A lot of the particular points are nonsense. As I understand it, no one is trying to "cancel" John Wayne, there's some controversy somewhere about a proposal to name an airport after him or something. Its not like they're trying to take his movies off TCM or whatever. June is a good time for a parade, and parades are part of Gay Pride Month, because its all about visibility. But maybe February is, in fact, the perfect time to stay inside and learn about some black history?

Anaxagoras - 2020-10-17

YES!!! Exactly!!! Your point about liking him the same way you like Bernie Sanders is exactly how I feel.

ashtar. - 2020-10-19

"I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility," the actor said. "I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/12/us/john-wayne-exhibit-usc-trnd/ index.html

He was a drunk, racist, McCarthyite reactionary. He's not worth celebrating as a person, but still made some good movies. Oh no, cancel culture!

SolRo - 2020-10-19

How will he make a living if he gets canceled?!?

ashtar. - 2020-10-19

When you're a kid you typically think your dad is an awesome hero and then you turn like 13 and realize he's actually kind of a dipshit.

There are people who spend their whole lives wishing they could take that realization back, and these are the people who bitch about cancel culture and statues and shit.

Nominal - 2020-10-18

"Trump and Hillary are both bad, so we should vote for Trump just because it would be hilarious!"

"Adopting shelter dogs is just inheriting someone else's problem. You want to pay top dollar and get one from a breeder!"

"There's too many people in the world. We need a plague to get rid of excess people. Also, I decided to add to the population by selfishly deciding to become a parent at age 50."

"My podcast is now entirely a sports talk and baking show."

Burr is a cunt who can go fuck himself.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-10-20

Voting on that awful video "Male Feminists Review Star Wars" reminded me of the time that I had to stop watching a Netflix special by Bill Burr when he started talking about male feminists, and it was just SO stupid, the usual 4chan bullshit about how men who profess feminism are only trying to get pussy.

It didn't insult me personally. People can take things personally in a way that's pretty ridiculous.

"Hillary Clinton said I'm deplorable."

Hillary Clinton doesn't know you, dude. She said racists are deplorable, so if you're not a racist, she may have been talking about someone else.

There were a lot of comments to be found after this monologue. "So I guess Bill Burr thinks my 30 years of anti-racism doesnt matter?" Really? That was.YOU he was talking about?

Even though I profess to be a feminist, I was offended or triggered in that way. It was just to dumb to keep watching. Click.
