The Mothership - 2020-12-14

Needs 'calliope' tag.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-14

I was just thinking that!

themilkshark - 2020-12-14

There are still Trump folks who refuse to wear masks and are organizing crowded protests.

The Lemmings don't see the risk.

casualcollapse - 2020-12-14

So you guys really think there's going to be a splinter group that's going to sap the Republican vote for years to come?

Gmork - 2020-12-14

A man can dream.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-14

I'm not sure that's exactly what's going to happen, but they have big problems. These guys couldn't win a pie-eating contest without their base, and their base is still having a bad romance with Donald Trump, and Donald Trump is not only historically unpopular, and somewhere on the habitual liar/ delusional narcissist / incompetent moron spectrum, he just lost! There's almost certainly political violence on the horizon, which they'll be held accountable for. They're destroying themselves, but maybe not fast enough to avoid taking us with them.

One third of the country believes Biden stole the election, not only because they believe anything Trump says, but because the certainty of Trump's reelection has been quite literally a religious belief for them. If Trump doesn't win, there must not be a god.

When People leave the Republican Party, it won't be from just one door.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2020-12-14

I think that tha JHM has a pretty good take.

SolRo - 2020-12-14

As long as the gop runs sufficiently racist/loud/stupid candidates those idiots will fall right back in line.

The question is if the moderate republicans will stay with the party, tolerating sinking towards incompetent fascism, for the promise of tax cuts.

Meerkat - 2020-12-14

Meh he was never a conservative he used to be a Demonrat and I never heard of the guy personally.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-14

>>>As long as the gop runs sufficiently racist/loud/stupid candidates those idiots will fall right back in line.

I don't think so. The source of Trump's power is FOURTEEN YEARS on network prime-time television, playing an infallible business genius that he certainly is not. The thing to watch out for is some egomaniac idiot seeking to launch a political career via "reality TV". It's the perfect vehicle for propaganda. If they ever catch the guy who burned down the studio with all of the footage from the Joe Exotic reality show, I'll be starting a kickstarter page for his defense.

SolRo - 2020-12-14

I think they’ll accept any dumb loudmouth bigot that the GOP is willing to spend money putting into the spotlight.

They accepted trump, a dumb, born-rich elite that wears spray tan and golfs all day, never did a hard days work in his life. So sheltered that he never learned to drive a car.

But he went on the TV and said racist things and that’s all that matters for the base. They want their bigotry justified, to be told that they are right and society is wrong.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-15

I think it's more complicated than that, and it obviously is. You seem to forget that the GOP establoishment fought against Donald Trump's candidacy, until his nomination was all but inevitable. But anyway, this is not a hill I choose to die on. You don't know what sventy million Trump voters are thing, and neither do I.

I mean, racism is undeniably a factor, but if that was all there was to it, Andrew Dice Clay would be president.

The thing to watch for is that the Republican party is the minority, and when you're in the minority, Democracy is not your friend. To hold power, the GOP is going to keep looking for a workaround.

Hazelnut - 2020-12-15

Yeah, bit rich of SolRo of all people to cast sweeping accusations of racism.

People are complicated, life is complicated. There's no question that the Republican party deliberately caters to a viciously racist "base", but that's not the end of the story. Not every Republican is a racist, and most certainly not every racist is a Republican.

The honest answer of what happens next is we don't know. In its current trajectory the Republicans are going to one-up "extremer than thou" each other and fade into obscurity like the Know Nothings or the Brexit Party (or on our side Occupy Wall Street). But trajectories often change; more than one commentator has pointed out how the Republicans looked doomed after Nixon and reinvented themselves in even nastier form under Reagan; the British Tories have done that kind of rebranding dozens of times over the centuries. We'll see.

SolRo - 2020-12-15

@JHM

the GOP was initially against trump because they thought that he would lose the election, and he probably would have without a bunch of external factors helping him out.

He won though, and I think he has activated a racist/militant right wing base that was previously largely inactive due to, you know, racism being unacceptable in public politics. Now they’re voting and marching and sending death threats and attacking people.

The gop has alienated a lot of the center and a lot of moderate minorities (yes, yes, you can shout “communism!” at the Cubans and they’ll jump in unison but that’s a small fraction of the minority vote) and they’re basically dependent on this lunatic fringe at this point. They’ve openly supported a Q anon nutter for the house already and I don’t see any reason they’d pass up on running another fascist demagogue for president.

And to bring it back to the point of this video; these nut jobs will fall right in to line if the gop runs trump again in 2024, or some other racist blowhard.

If you honestly think about it the berners that hate the DNC would also fall into line if the DNC ran Bernie or AOC for president.

It’s the simplest of human emotions, to hate something that isn’t working the way you want it and to like it when it does.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-16

A lot of these people will certainly vote for any generic racist blowhard, but the level of devoltion Trump enjoys goes well beyond that. Imagine if TRUMPH OF THE WILL was a television show, and it was on TV for 14 years.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-16

"devoltion"?

SolRo - 2020-12-16

Dolt devolution; devoltion.

Really though they fact that they latched on to someone as transparently pathetic, lazy and cowardly as trump shows me that the racist right will take anyone with a pulse and a dog whistle.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-16

BUT he wasn't transparently pathetic, lazy and cowardly if you watched him on THE APPRENTICE, and he was on the Apprentice for fourteen years. That's almost three times as many years as he's been in politics. NBC, the home of SNL, Seth Meyer, and Rachel Maddow, really did more to create the myth of Donald Trump than Fox News.

But the capper is the way that Trump won the Presidency in 2016, contrary to the media's expectations. The way this dovetailed with the ridiculous myth of Donald Trump as infallible genius with the magic touch that the base had been sold for years as if it were truth, and played into their natural and sometimes understandable mistrust of corporate media, in my opinion, wasn't planned. It was an accident.

He had proved them wrong, and I personally can't blame them for loving that. But then he told them to ignore the fake news, and they should have been a littlle more discerning about them. Never believe a politician who tells you that someone who isn't ALSO a politician is "playing politics".

The weird and fucked up thing about Trumpism is that it's all about Trump, and not much else. Trump says that the FBI is trying to frame him, and soon law and order Republicans are investigating the FBI. Devin Nunes is cooking up tissue-thin evidence and playing it up like it's a Wagner cycle of operas. Trump decides that downplaying the corona virus is in his best interest, and before long, Republican Politicians are on TV, declaring that they're willing to lay down their lives for "our children", but you know that if Trump asked them, they'd sell their granddaughters to Jeffrey Epstein. A plurality of America is willing to act on anything that this sociopathic, narcissistic, dishonest self-dealing huckster asks of him. And he's willing to do whatever gets the biggest applause line at those fucking rallies. It must seem like heaven to him.

SolRo - 2020-12-16

The one thing we can be certain of is that a large portion of the republican base just doesn’t want to live in our reality.

Given the manifestation of a racist, self-centered, bold-faced lie of American exceptionalism they bowed down and prayed at its alter. They want to live in the movie version of America, where everyone loves “the flag” and hard work pays off and black people are servile.

But they’re so fucking dumb that they think the party of union busting and corporate oligarchy will deliver that for them. That the party that fetishizes war but never fights, while funneling trillions to their defense contractor friends, is somehow patriotic and respects soldiers.

It’s just so fucking dumb. It’s beyond parody or satire or believable fiction. This is too stupid to exist anywhere but reality.

Hazelnut - 2020-12-17

There was a pretty good article in the NYT about ‘dreampolitik’, the increasing number of people on both sides who prefer their politics based purely in fantasyland unpolluted by messy real life. It’s a strange-ass phenomenon and very hard to see where it goes next.

AFRICAN ANGELS TO REPUBLICANS: DROP DEAD!

themilkshark - 2020-12-24

they trollin' from the spiritual plane

Two Jar Slave - 2020-12-14

Who was that movie rapping about angelic reinforcements from South America?

Two Jar Slave - 2020-12-14

*woman, not movie

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-14

That's Paula White. Google her, ye reasonable, and despair! Check out those shoes!

Two Jar Slave - 2020-12-14

Oh okay, she's just another televangelist influencer. I say good on her and ALL the televangelist snakes for conning private jets out of their lonely and spiritually desolate subs. Religion is entertainment, always has been; the biggest difference is now that we all know what 'parasocial' means we're better equipped to understand the nature of what they're selling.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-14

She's not just another televangelist. She's Donald Trump's "Spiritual Advisor". Probably because she's got a great ass.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-14

That's Paula White. Google her, ye reasonable, and despair! Check out those shoes!

Hazelnut - 2020-12-14

Obviously these people don't represent all 76 million Americans who voted for Trump. Thirty to fifty million tops.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-14

Always remember that the most arrogant, obnoxious, and deranged members of any group are always, by definition, aways the most visible. That's ANY group! Republicans, gays, muslims, drinkers, people with cats... etc. It's always been that way, but then came the internet.

Nominal - 2020-12-15

77% of republicans believe the election was stolen.

You'd have to be deranged to think that.

Hazelnut - 2020-12-15

77% of 75 million is 57.75 million, so we're talking about the same ballpark.

And to be generous, I bet some of that 77% meant "stolen" only in the looser sense. I certainly think that in 2016 the election was "stolen" by Russian interference. At the time many on our side hoped that electors would develop a conscience and refuse to install Trump.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-12-19

Last night, I sat in the dark and watched about an hour and a half of this crazy YouTube MAGA stuff that someone had collected, and divided into various categories: crying, raging, music... and Randy Quaid. Some of it is terrifying, some of it is quite creative.

themilkshark - 2020-12-24

My aunt is an old white Italian lady who reads Catholic newspapers and drinks the right wing media racist Kool Aid. She's scared of the others because her dad was a brown man who fought in WWII and looks brown but had a fierce white identity. In his old age, he wore Italian flags on his clothing and displayed an Italian flag emblem on his car. I look like him.

They kicked me out of the white race this year. I'm brown now. I realized it crying at In and Out at 1 am this month. Thank God my Grandpa subversively prepared me for this.
