I did this with an APC UPS when it started to flash and beep, even though the battery is new, it powers equipment and it seems fine in every other way.

I yahnked the cover off the speaker, pulled the element off, and now there are just two pins sticking up from the board. The power light flashes away, but it's been fine for several months.

I'm a tech, and yet took a decidedly low tech solution.
