My parents initially didn't allow us to watch the Simpsons and then finally gave it chance during the second season. Just one watch and they could see that the moral guardians went a bit overboard in their critiques.

My parents never had a problem with the show, so I watched it all the time growing up. I just remember being very confused by the outrage as I'm a kid who grew up with parents that let me watch Robocop, Predator and Child's Play when I in elementary school, so to me, I had already heard really vulgar stuff and didn't think The Simpsons came remotely close to vulgar or offensive (granted I was a kid so nothing really "offended" me anyways).

That said this video really shows how folks who complain that this generation is constantly easily offended and reaching with their "outrage" sure do like to ignore the past and act like there wasn't just as many easily offended people with too much time on their hands and a moral high horse to ride. You have to be really thin skinned If the hill you want to die on is a Simpsons shirt with the word HELL on it possibly being viewed in schools by other kids. Goofy shit overall.

i was allowed to watch the simpsons but not in living color - and married with children was frowned on. fox the tv station had a really bad reputation amongst the upstanding midwestern moral scolds of the early 90s

i also think a lot of it was the idea back then that "cartoons = strictly for kids" and people assumed anything slightly subversive when animated was clearly trying to get little billy to set the courthouse on fire

It was one of the most wholesome shows on TV to be honest
