I remember hearing a pop linguistics theory that Hitler could never happen in an English speaking country because English is too sarcastic and ironic so people wouldn't take his words seriously.
But in reality our Hitler would just use that fact against us. He'd be a goofy, ironic, clownish Hitler.
The original Nazis could be pretty clownish themselves. In his memoir, "A Tale of Love and Darkness," Amos Oz remembers one of his relatives referring to Hitler as a "ragamuffin." He wasn't completely wrong to do so. Before they were resignified as the epitome of human evil, the Nazis were ridiculous German kitsch.
