Not sure it's really the strangest cult in Japan, but deserves mention for size and crazy.

teethsalad - 2021-04-03 oh yeah i agree with you - way crazier cults and uyoku out there, but vice has gotta get them clicks with a catchy title

SolRo - 2021-04-03 What’s the deal with Japanese cults?
(Laugh track)
No, seriously, why are they so prevalent in a developed nation with high education standards?
|
teethsalad - 2021-04-04 they have high education standards, sure, but that educational system doesn't emphasize independent thought and celebrates submission to authority for authority's sake. i imagine that (along with a number of other factors) primes a certain subset of the population for this sort of thing
but you'll find disillusioned and dogmatic people everywhere in the world. plenty of highly educated people end up in bizzare sects everyfuckingwhere

Not nearly the weirdest Japanese cult. Aum Shinrikyo (now "Aleph") is FAR more interesting. Soka Gakkai is the cult I saw the most of when I was over there, but they seem kind of boring too compared to Aum Shinrikyo.
