My best guess of how the timeline goes:
1. Gaetz's friend Greenberg rats him out while being investigated for child sex trafficking and/or the FBI discovers Gaetz is involved with Greenberg's crimes during the investigation, and makes contact with Gaetz's victim.
2. Gaetz's victim lawyers up, the lawyer approaches Gaetz for a settlement to avoid a civil suit.
3. Gaetz, being a dumbass, believes that the contact from the lawyer is an extortion attempt and contacts the FBI to insist that they investigate.
4. DOJ makes investigation public to avoid a deal being made between Gaetz and the victim to not cooperate with the FBI in exchange for money.
