Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2021-04-21

This looks ok tbh. It is certainly *extremely weird* to remake a similar version of a perfectly serviceable show, but I dont see any problems with that clip. They still have Richard Ayoade, and he was by far the funniest main character. Yer wan is ok, but the Irish guy sucks, he is not funny imo, he was stinkin' up that show.
Also the show overall is not amazing (like its pretty good, its not bad, pls dont get ure panties in a bunch) Graham Linehan shows seem to be much better when he has a writing partner.

I don't agree, but I understand comedy is subjective. Chris O'Dowd was a great lovable underdog. I think Joel McHale comes off poorly doing Chris's material and the "please hold" joke is infuriating to anyone who has experienced a shitty tech support person. Also Joel looks fat and bald and comes off whiny, when most tech folk in the US are well paid. I love that Ayoade was untouched though. The show didn't need to be remade.

I always thought this was a weird role for Dean Learner.

Did we? We still got Big Bang Theory.

Interesting that Richard Ayoade is in both versions. It's like how they had the Brittish Kryten in the US Red Dwarf.

SolRo - 2021-04-22

Ayoade is too good to not have in any comedy show.

I enjoyed IT Crowd well enough to watch it, mostly for the crazy boss scenes. It's so weird that they went THIS close on the remake, down to wearing equivalent t-shirts. That fact sort of makes me like the whole show less, and I am pretty equally neutral on the two "RTFM" actors.

I think the thing that bothers me most about the concept of the US remake is that Roy, as played by Chris O'Dowd, is sort of nerdy and goofy but overall decent, whereas Joel McHale's Roy, at least in this clip, seems smarmier and somehow meaner and more aloof. I also have a harder time seeing him interact with some of the more surreal aspects of the UK version, assuming they would transfer over. And if they don't, the US version seems like it would just end up being a totally Big Bang-like sitcom which we have one too many of already.

You are right about the shift in emotional tone between the characters. I'd anticipate a lot of difficulty sympathizing with the US version of the character; he just seems meaner. As (irrelevant) commentary about differing dominant personality traits between random Irish guys and random American guys, it matches my prejudices well. As an instrument of laughter, it's b0rked.

Also what were they planning to do about the times that character perceived anti-Irish prejudice with mr. wasp over here?

In contrast, the American Office may've been its own special tragedy, but its adaptation sure was more imaginative.
