Sure, Bitcoin is a dumb wasteful fad. History is littered with dumb fads. The Tulip Mania was nearer to the Beginning of Capitalism than the end. And you can't blame capitalists for the Children's Crusade or ancient Rome's talking bird speculators.

It should also be remembered that Bitcoin mining, while shitty, isn’t nearly as shitty as the ACTUAL mining which is how most coinage between 1000 BC and 1900 AD was made. Thoss mines were and are intensely shitty for workers and the environment.

Honestly, the most ethical currency devised so far is fiat currency, where currency is based on ‘the full faith and credit’ of a government instead of on resource exploitation. To beat that you either need a Star Trek post-currency society or, I don’t know, currency based on orgasms or something.
