When I was a kid in social studies class we learned about how part of the downfall of the USSR was that only "old guard" communists ended up being leaders and they just all kept getting older and couldn't keep up with the demands of the job and the changing world. Until Gorbachev they were still the same old guys who survived sitting next to Stalin. If they let in new blood maybe things wouldn't have gotten as extreme and the USSR could have gradually evolved instead of breaking completely.

Is this ringing any bells for anyone? "Don't trust anyone over 30" wasn't a fucking joke.

I forgot to mention we had a special term for this: gerontocracy.

What a great idea to grade leaders on age alone. What a dazzling utopia we'll see once Madison Cawthorn, Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton, or Dan Crenshaw become president.

Ok so 1) you take a reasonable argument and extremize it and add a bunch of assumptions, and 2) lol it's not my fault all your realistic candidates are old farts.

Here in Canada when Trudeau was first running against Harper (2015), the main attack add against Trudeau was basically ageist: "he's just not ready" was the tagline. The dude was FOURTY FOUR YEARS OLD. I have my own complaints about Trudeau but being too young is not on my list.

I looked up the average age of our MPs that year and it was like 55-60 or so. The average age of our senators was way higher like 65+ (but they sit for life so that's at least how it's supposed to work). Average Canadian population was somewhere in the 40s.

it's almost like brutally suppressing any candidates to the left of Reagan for the last 30 something years and also then clearing the bench in the last decade to make sure that nobody got in Hillary's way has had a detrimental effect on the number of young up and coming Democratic candidates

And why should we cut people off at 65?

Because an old fart is just as capable of coming up with good ideas and letting people know about them as any young person, but a young person is more likely to listen to good ideas that come from other people.

All capitalist-imperialist party members, red or blue editions, are utter pieces of shit. Some, like Biden and Trump, are worse than others. Bernie was slightly less bad than most.

I love it when at an academic seminar a super old retired prof sits at the front, appears to sleep through the whole talk, then still manages to ask a relevant question at the end.

Maybe devil's advocate: it's probably easy with enough experience to ignore boring speeches and talks and still respond properly because you knew what they were going to say anyways. Political speeches typically aren't the most innovative or complex messages.

Sometimes I close my eyes when listening to someone so I can focus on what they are saying, especially for technical/mathematical/geometric stuff. It helps me visualize.

It's weird to be so into political tribalism that you can't laugh at your own side. It's especially weird to feel this way about the modern democratic party, given their charisma vacuum and the only reason given to vote for them is that they're not as bad as the other guys.

I rank this up there with "Trump wearing a diaper!!" and "Trump gasping for air during a speech!" and "Pelosi drunk during a conference!" as among the most disappointing title-to-video ratios of its kind. I came here to see Joe Biden's head fall into his chest, damnit, or at least do that 'startled awake' move after an awkwardly long silence. Whether or not he dozed off, this is just a video of a man sitting still for a few seconds and then responding correctly at the correct time.

I had a friend at university who would sit in the front row of classes and sleep through the entire lecture. Almost every single lecture, and I'm talking about her master's degree here. It got so that at least one prof reached out to her privately out of concern, and another made joke questions about her on the final exam. This video ain't got shit.
