This site is where I found out, at minimum, that Norm Macdonald and Rik Mayall had died.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-09-14

Just found out, and came straight here to perhaps submit, but more likely to upvote, or five star whatever tribute was going to waiting for me. We all loved Norm. I remember the first time I saw him on Short Attention Span theater. He talked about a guy who murdered his family because the Devil told him to ("what a dork!) , and what if that had been a prank?

"Oh Bob! You got me! I have my family chopped up in a duffle bag, but that was a good one, Bob!"

In retrospect, it wasn't a great routine, especially compared to Bob Odenkirk's absurdist one man Abraham Lincoln show, which was in rotation about the same time (also a Mentos commercial every 15 minutes, 24/7).

But Norm MacDonald's voice and diction could elevate everything he said into high comedy. His arguably most famous joke, about Bill Cosby, wasn't even a joke. It was a simple, direct statement of obvious fact.

In the late nineties, I had a girlfriend who had a sexual crush on Norm McDonald. She signed up for the Win A Date with Norm Contest, and once had a dream about Norm with a giant corkscrew penis.

RIP.

My ex-girlfriend who loved Norm died in 2014. She was just 47. Fuck cancer.

Hazelnut - 2021-09-15

He's up in Heaven now, corkscrewing the angels

Anaxagoras - 2021-09-15

47??? Jesus H. Christ. That's *way* too young. I'm so sorry, JHM.

simon666 - 2021-09-16

Sorry to hear it, JHM :(

casualcollapse - 2021-09-16

Him keeping it secret just makes me respect him more

badideasinaction - 2021-09-17

The time he got post-retirement Letterman on his show and Letterman at the end was visibly pissed that Norm was doing a basement show and not The Late Show and Norm was just really evasive over why he wasn't looking at headlining a major TV thing...

..people assumed it was substance or gambling addiction and wanting to stay away from the spotlights but maybe the cancer was the reason why and he knew he wouldn't be able to hide it with that profile of a gig.

Celebrity deaths don't normally phase me but this one crushes me. The way I like to wind down after a stressful day is a nice brandy and some Norm on Youtube. Doesn't matter if I've seen it 30 times. It would still put me in a happy place.

The Mothership - 2021-09-15

Yeah man. Yeah, I know.

casualcollapse - 2021-09-15

you sound like a cultured person..... His passing affected(or is it effected?) me more than Trevor Moore, thats for sure

That bit with Letterman at 9:28- he was such a handsome dude!

jangbones - 2021-09-15

I rewatched the Mangrate montage on Sunday.

Hard to say who poetv collectively admired more than Norm. MAYBE Werner Herzog. Not many else spring to mind.

erratic - 2021-09-15

Maybe Frank Zappa. But yeah, Norm's a legend.

casualcollapse - 2021-09-16

https://bit.ly/2Z3st08 montage here

badideasinaction - 2021-09-17

Apparently Mangrate was honoring his coupon code in memory of him, even after dumping him as a sponsor.

Boomer The Dog - 2021-09-16

I knew about him on the periphery, but it was his role as Lucky in the Eddie Murphy Doctor Dolittle movies that put him on the map for me, that voice is perfect for Lucky the well-worn mutt. He IS Lucky.

Boom

jfcaron_ca - 2021-09-17

Glad to see you pop in Boomer, it's fun to know you're still around.

Boomer The Dog - 2021-09-19

I've always liked this site, the people here aren't normal.
