A few years back here in Seattle we had a guy that climbed up in a giant tree downtown. Every news station posted up, and he was a hero for the first day. There were live streams, "Man in Tree" became a meme. Then he started tearing the tree apart and throwing shit at rescue workers. I knew a lot of very liberal people that went from "haha, yay man in tree" to some troubling NIMBY attitudes over those few days, and I have not seen a change of heart. No more talk about the glaring holes in our treatment of mental health issues and providing social safety nets, more talk about how to get such cases out of the way.

We also have constant footage of encampment fires every winter, and the footage itself does sway some folks. This country has a plump, pliable center that is currently Fox's target. In tabloids, it's the art that sways.

They see OAN and Newsmax as a far horizon threat, because Fox let a few voices against Trump be heard. They're currently trying to toe the line between brink neolibs (they have Manchin on Sunday morning ffs) while also trying to maintain the xenophobic, WAR ON CHRISTMAS types that are slowly trickling to other outlets, or cutting the cable outright.
