Back in the 1970s, people were indeed pretty bad about leaving prescription medication sitting down where kids could get hold of it.

They also smoked in small enclosed spaces alongside kids.

And up until about 1983, you could buy a bottle of OTC medication, take it home, carefully open the box, empty the medicine out of the capsules, re-fill the capsules with lethal poison, glue the box back shut and sneak it back onto the shelf at the store.
