I do indeed remember Origin. I was attached to EA Sports, but working in the Origin building in Austin when the SHTF in March of 2000. I rode up in the elevator with Garriott one Thursday and he was talking about getting more personally involved in the ongoing projects -- then he was gone the following Monday, and I and just about everyone else were laid off the week after. It was a bitch trying to find work in Austin then with a couple hundred unemployed game designers competing for jobs.

i remember receiving one of these through some random mailing, probably leaked out from my pc gamer subscription, although mine was from interplay in 1997, previewing decent into undermountain, die by the sword and the original fallout.

as for origin, i remember quite a few great games coming from them, including crusader: no remorse, which really needs to get some videos on youtube. gotta wonder that games would be getting churned out if all the big names still worked in the small houses like they did back then instead of splitting into their own studios. probably too many chefs, but it's nice to think that we would have had bioshock's and phychonauts' sooner if they did.

"but it's nice to think that we would have had bioshock's and phychonauts' sooner if they did." What the hell does that even mean?

I just mean that perhaps we would be farther along in game development if the supposed big brains were still working in the same house. i liked origin when it was around, same with troika, the anachnox side of ion storm, black isle and others. there are companies i miss and i was simply speculation on what we might have by now if they were still around.

Why would they advertise Pagan's beyond-infuriating jump puzzles?

bongoprophet - 2007-10-23

actually, in a patch they changed it so that you just had to place the cursor where you wanted to jump and click to jump there.

Combat was still silly as hell tho.

Origin wins just for giving us the Wing Commander and Ultima Series (except for horrible, horrible Ultimas 8 and 9 but the rest of the series more than made up for these 2 stinkers IMO).

zatojones - 2007-09-20

Origin is most awesome for their 80s era games. As a kid I totally dug Autoduel and Omega.

Doctor Arcane - 2007-09-20

Pagan fucking sucked. System Shock redeems them though.

It was impossible to shoot down those Zepplins without cheats =(

Good lord Bioshock was gorgeous for the time.

Freudian slip?

garcet71283 - 2007-09-20

I shot down the zeps...

I too miss this company, some of my best childhood memories involve the Wing Commander series.

Xiphias - 2007-09-20

Bioforge has the look and taste of a major hollywood picture!

Five stars for Garriot sporting the same hair I would were I to grow my male-pattern-pate out to full effect.

I don't know what you're doing now Garriot, but the bald-man cometh.

These games mostly sucked :\

Wings of Glory had better graphics, but played worse than Dynamix's old Red Baron. Much less dynamic campaign too, traded in for a shitty movie story. Pretty much the same arc that Wing Commander followed with its sequels.

Ultima 8 was the worst Ultima until 9.

Bioforge fared the best, but was janky as fuck. It was a super ambitious idea that was released at least 2 years ahead of the technology that would make it work.
