only three because they discuss the issue of security contractors. but minus two because this is hyperbolic crap. when the rep. (D-IL) spoke of 40 cents on the dollar going to military contractors, that includes ppl who drive trucks that ship supplies, rebuild infrastructure, etc., and this is edited together to imply, or rather does imply from poor producing on their part, the 40 cents relates to blackwater.

this basically is FUD, to use slashdot speak. watch the frontline documentary on private contractors if you care to actually know something after having watched it. it's called "Private Warriors" and can be watched in full online:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/warriors/view/
cheers.

IrishWhiskey - 2007-09-22

Private Warriors is good, and its always worth getting more perspective. But I don't think they were trying to suggest that 40 cents on the dollar went to Blackwater.

Scahill has a lot of good stuff to say of the nature of those running Blackwater (complete die-hard fundamentalists loyal only to one Party), their criminal activities, the blatant corruption in contracting, the complete legal immunity in which they operate in Iraq, and how this type of organization in undermining the codes and principles of legality in military operations.

Its not a perfect documentary, but it should be required viewing for anyone trying to have an informed opinion on Iraq and the future of our military.

simon666 - 2007-09-22

what i was saying is the part with the representative from IL does not support this clips angle towards blackwater, and confuses the subject matter.

but also, this guy is just being a whiny baby. and please note my usage of hyperbolic as in adjective version hyperbole. if this guy were to chat online it would either in in all caps, italics, or bold, or all three.

if he wants a thinking person to take him seriously i'd suggest dropping exasperated tone of injustice in his voice.

but again, three starts because after all it is a good topic.

simon666 - 2007-09-22

also i just watched the clip again, and is this really anything more than bush bashing thats en vogue right now? "american war machine", "So-called war on terror" give it a rest.

also, equating clinton pulling out somalia with 'revenge attack' in faluga is not even comparable.

FABIO2 - 2007-09-22

I kind of got the impression it was an amateurish BUSH BAD production just from the gay title.

mr666 - 2007-09-22

Bush bashing? If you want to see it that way, then fine. But the true issue is the unprecedented level of reliance on a private organization in an American military affair. If this somehow doesn't raise an eyebrow then you have some serious problems.

simon666 - 2007-09-22

love how my 666 brother seems to be arguing against a point i didn't make. can we call a spade a spade, please?

in fact, my first comment suggests i do care about the issue of private security contractors such as Blackwater, and i even go so far as to suggest further viewing.

Aelric - 2007-09-23

welcome to my world of misunderstood comments. i get what your trying to say, simon666. quite frankly, i'm so sick of every piece of art or faux news i see being about bush, be it subtle or not. i used to be on the bandwagon, but now i'm so jaded that i can't wait for the day that he is just a memory, both because i hate him, and because i hate all his enemies. being a moderate is not a happy lifestyle.

I tend to believe you on the 40 cent thing too, as if 40 cents were going directly to blackwater, we would have a fully privatized police force by now because no single organization gets that kind of federal funding. but it's a documentary, and i long ago only expected "truthiness" from then. still, blackwater should not exist in my opinion. truly frightening. hence, my cyberpunk future line below.

Roachbud - 2007-09-23

Honestly what do you expect from the Nation? It's a magazine that is deliberately liberal, they make no attempt to be balanced. Bush deserves to be bashed because he is the most useless, idiotic fuck ever to occupy the White House. Fifty years from now, people are going to look back on his presidency like we do at Commodus' reign in the Roman Empire. America is done and it's Bush's fault.

Aelric - 2007-09-23

america was done before bush got the throne. we just didn't see it because we were too concerned with blowjobs in the white house. bush is certainly a contributer, but honestly, gore or kerry would not be a huge difference. heed my advice, folks: don't have kids. you'll just bring them into worse than we got.

good point, however, roachbud. neither side attempts to remain balanced anymore. it's either sucking bush's dick or chopping it off, everywhere. that's why i would need crack to care anymore. america IS done, but it's not bush's fault, it's the media's. when journalistic integrity died, so died the rest of our chunk of the world.

that's why i enjoy kitten videos, sketch show clips and movies from other countries. that's why i plan to get out of the country after college. that is why i hope to retire early and cut myself off from the majority of the world without offspring. it's all fucked, so i'd rather just enjoy myself, pull up a chair and watch something besides the apocalypse.

mr666 - 2007-09-23

You know, Aleric, if you kill yourself now you'll be saving the Feds the task of raiding your gunstacked compund 20 years in the future.

Roachbud - 2007-09-23

Gore wouldn't have gone into Iraq after passing huge tax cuts which is the biggest accelerator to America's downfall.

Aelric - 2007-09-22

ah yes, blackwater. my little proof that we already live in the cyberpunk future.

what can i say, other than they world is fucked, and we're all fucked with it. i know that when i look back on my life as an old man, i'll feel a certain level of shame for simply being of the same species that produces corporate armies and nuclear bombs.

sigh. where is my cottage in the woods? i want to get away from all this shit.

Valkor - 2007-09-22

Yep. Can't think of any corporate armies before Blackwater. Not at all.

TinManic - 2007-09-22

he seems to be as unfamiliar with sourcing his statements as he is with daily shaving.

Roachbud - 2007-09-22

What do you want him to say: "Sgt Shitface told me yesterday" after every sentence? He's not writing for the local paper.

IrishWhiskey - 2007-09-22

Then read the book. Plenty of sourcing there. You can't expect a 4 minute preview clip to give you anything more than the most basic summation of a complex situation.

voodoo_pork - 2007-09-22

True. It's designed to be a preview, not a documentary feature. In a way, even documentary features should not serve as a sole information source for a complex political topic, but should serve mainly as a rhetorical visual aid.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2007-09-23

I don't care if any of these people get killed. (Blackwater employees) Maybe that makes me a bad person. I've just lost the ability to care.

Old People - 2014-11-22

Counterpoint: Blackwater is awesome. They're called Academi now, in the interest of presenting a kinder gentler machine gun hand. Some of their guys have done bad shit, and their founder is a psycho, but the training they provide is second to none. I'm too much of a dirtbag to ever be hired by them, but I have graduated some of their courses, and the shit they teach is above and beyond anything I learned in the Army. They may be bad guys, but say you have to go fight a Jedi Knight, who's gonna teach you how to use a light saber? Not Obi Wan; he's too moral. But old Vader will totally bring you up to speed if you sling him some dough ("The remuneration is sufficient...for now...Let us begin.").
The shit I learned at Academi has saved my life at least once (admittedly it wasn't in combat, it was on a highway; their driving course is amazing), and I'm taking their skill set with me on my next contract. It makes me more employable and will keep me alive downrange.
In an ideal world, Academi wouldn't exist. But as long as they do, I'm a fan.
