As much of a redneck spectacle it is I wouldn't mind doing that myself. Except I'd want mini guns and rocket launchers on mine just like in Interstate '76.

Yeah. Demo derbies are always much cooler in concept than execution. Most of them are reversing into the other guy at 5 mph in wet mud to see who can lightly fender bender the other guy to death. The majority of "kills" are from the shitty engines dying instead of any actual damage.
I've been to one of these (in Waterford, CT), and it was sort of unbelievable how rank the air got with the smells of fear, gasoline and testosterone. And the buses got absolutely destroyed -- most of them looked like they'd been picked up and crushed in a giant's fist.
There was also a Motorcycle Demolition Derby that night, but it was like a pro-wrestling scaffold match; everyone was so aware of the immediate danger that they moved far too timidly for anything exciting to happen.
