Sure he was no Les Claypool or whatever modern 14-string jazz-funk slap fusion whatever. He was the Ox. He INVENTED the rock bass solo. Check out "My Generation". The Who, he sat in back, fingers flying.. he died shortly after this.
If you are reading this, give up some stars for The Ox, the first big quiet guy to step forward and hammer his fuck fingers down on some riffs for 4 strings in the name of rock.
Do it for The Who.
