An independent creator retains copyright of his/her work for the same monetary reasons as a company. So he should have probably adressed the volumes upon volumes of legalese defining work for hire and its evils/battles (see Atari, Joe Seigel and Jerry Shuster, Bill Finger, etc.) instead of leaving this as the overly simplified tiff it is.
