What retard daydreams and snickers about how the other guy will fuck up his move when he's 5 inches from your face?

yeahjim - 2008-04-01

I don't know if you've fully contemplated just how badass a samurai is.

What makes this scene work beautifully, in case you haven't seen the movie, is that Zatoichi works with that one grip throughout the whole film up until this point. The samurai isn't trusting Z to fuck up his move; he's trusting him to use the technique he has throughout the film. And he doesn't even have time to stop smiling after Z switches grip. :)

Totally... his smile was only starting to drop when he was made dead.

I recently started watching the originals starting with the B+W ones in the early 60s. I'm only at movie 4 now, and, and just based on this clip alone I don't think I can handle the new one. Takeshi Kitano isn't the write director to pull them off in my opinion.

It's all downhill after Zatoichi 4, which is one of my favorite movies. But yeah, the new Zatoichi was mostly dumb CGI stuff. It was hard to watch.

Aubrey McFate - 2008-04-01

Maybe he could right the script.

Samisyosam - 2008-04-01

I hated this movie because I watched too many of the original series, which were a hell of a lot more entertaining despite being old and less flashy. And the ending... god damn it.

Two stars for this clip without the context.

This is okay, but yes, there's nothing here that the originals don't do 100X better.

If you haven't seen Zatoichi vs. Yojimbo... oh man!

Thatcher Pennywhistle - 2008-04-01

I may be the only person who likes both the classic Zatoichi movies and Takeshi's update.

The new one is a Takeshi movie first and a Zatoichi movie second. I don't revere the originals, and I like Beat Takeshi, so this movie doesn't offend me. Also:
*spoiler*
1. I like the cgi blood, as cheesy as it is. I thought it was a fun modern addition to the genre.
2. The character that is inspired to become a transvestite by the "sister" is great.
3. The backstories are fun.
4. The final dance number is great, and perfect cap to a movie that doesn't take itself seriously.

Endoris - 2008-04-02

You know, I think the only thing I didn't like about the new one was the techno music. Takeshi still managed to structure it like one of the old movies; with multiple mostly unrelated stories going on that converge later towards the end. Generally, I think the original ones are better, though.

Nerds of the originals should seriously stop comparing them. Kitano is not Katsu shin and viceversa. Each have their own style, i liked the touches that Kitano gave here, Thatcher already mentioned most of the good stuff here.
