Computer animators NOW are lucky to get this much expression from their characters.

Lassetter wrote a formative computer animation paper based around how in the production of this movie they went back and relearned the lessons from traditional cel animation but applied them to 3D. It's a lesson that most studios still haven't learned, unfortunately.

Good 3D animation takes just as much effort as good 2D animation. It's just capable of doing a lot more with that effort.

I remember seeing this back in the 1980s on a TV special about computer graphics.

Most of the other bits of digital animation featured geometric shapes. This was the only one that looked "alive."
