Heh, I meant to put "man is the only animal". sorry mistyped there. Saw the vid of monkeys helping disabled people in the hopper and thought of this movie.

The climax, the final scene, man vs. monkey, is worth the price of admission alone and I'm surprised it's not up here already.

Well, it looks better than Land of the Dead. Of course, so does leprosy so that's not really a fair comparison.

It is. Like other good Romero films, this is both crude and powerful on the level of genre and sophisticated and subtle in its social and psychological implications, which, in this case, mainly have to do with sexual undertones (the competition of various females, including the monkey, for the hero's care and affection). It's one of his most effective and interesting horror thrillers.

Wikipedia curdles the potential surprise for a first time "Monkey Shines" viewer thusly:

"When Ella cradles Alan's head, Alan, painfully betraying Ella's trust, grips her with his teeth and crushes Ella to death by whipping her body from side to side."

I remember seeing this in movies. Mom would take me to all the R-rated horror/violence flicks I wanted.

As a 10-year-old, this did not scare me.

This movie did for helper monkeys what Jaws did for sharks. And this is better than Jaws because it's about a helper monkey.
