yeah it was pretty unpretentious, just a homage to Japanese films on Jarmusch's part, it's just a nice twist on the samurai movie.

I am perpetually grateful that Jarmusch had a lick of good sense about this movie. He could have made our protagonist a total weeaboo, always talking about "the code of the samurai dictates that ..." and "as a latter-day samurai I am obligated to ..." The suck levels would have been off the chart.
