My mom hated this movie for scaring the living crap out of her. She saw it in the theatre when it first came out in 1963.

She was 38.

That closing shot was the saving grace of an otherwise boring ass movie.
And no, it's not just because that's how movies were back then, I like plenty of movies that came out around that time.

I think the point of the slow-ass first half is to get the audience to feel a bit for the characters. That way, when all hell breaks loose, there's an emotional connection and they aren't just "Victim #12."
