StanleyPain Earthbound was great, but not CT great.
My fave party in CT was always Crono, Ayla, and Robo. Kick some serious ass with those guys.
For the parts without Crono, I'd go with Ayla, Robo, and Frog

This game did so many amazing little things that have not even been ATTEMPTED since. It invented the New Game+ concept, for example, but since then every game that uses it just throws it in as a cheap "do the same thing again but with more items" pittance. CT actually let you do all sorts of crazy shit with its storyline by playing through again and killing the final boss at different points in the narrative.
How can you not love a game that lets your derail the course of evolution so the dominant species ends up being a bunch of talking lizards?

I'm pretty sure this is the only RPG I've ever liked enough to beat. Most RPGs bored the piss out of me but Chrono Trigger kept my piss firmly engaged. 5 stars for keeping my pants dry.

My friend who only plays sports games has played through this and loved, a friend who hates console RPGs played through this and loved, finally, my girlfriend played this and loved it. Best, most accessible console RPG ever.
Also, this intro rocks.

I'm actually kind of glad they didn't rush and make a true sequel to this game (Chrono Cross DOES NOT count). It's such an amazing culmination of the SNES's capabilities and fantastic production team, with one of the best storylines of any RPG.

I remember when Square(soft) released Secret of Mana in 93, FF VI in 94, and Chrono Trigger in 95, and everyone thought that their games were just going to keep getting better.

Xenocide They had so much goodwill built up back then, I remember one game magazine called FFVII "the greatest entertainment product in human history."
Then a year later they gave FFVIII a negative review for being "just like VII."

One of those rare games where every awesome thing in the intro is something you actually get to do at some point while playing the game.
And one of those even rarer games that tries to be a whole bunch of things and succeeds at all of them.
