: It is creepy and his skin looks like painted rubber :

Still, that's a very good model and an even better rig. This guy's work is top notch.

He didn't dig the uncanny valley, he just works there.
Spike Jonez - 2008-07-07
He'd walk out of the uncanny valley if he could get some chips and a decent cup of tea up there.

SpookyElectric - 2008-07-07
couldn't they have picked someone more attractive than Thom Yorke? I guess ugly is more of a challenge, though.
kelpfoot - 2008-07-07
Before I die, I'll see you sodomized in half by a horse.

I suppose you think CGI should be reserved for models only.

The most extensive facial set-up I've ever seen and this is my line of work. I feel ashamed. 5 stars!
fatatty - 2008-07-07
The crazy thing is he's just using Max.

He taught himself Max Scripting to "...create a facial and muscle system that would give the flexibility to create a complete range of expressions and deformations.
This whole process took him eight months, but is now fully transferable from character to character."

He also paints all the pores by hand. I too feel ashamed.

That's incredible, really.
coprolalia - 2008-07-07
It looks animatronic.
TeenerTot - 2008-07-07
5 stars for the workmanship. But at this point, wouldn't it be more cost-effective to hire a real actor?
Steve Airport - 2008-07-08
Agreed, and wouldn't it have been cheaper to just film the moon landing on Earth in secret? What a big waste of time that whole space travel business turned out to be, huh?

cognitivedissonance - 2008-07-07
It looks like Gigolo Joe's less charismatic brother.
Cleaner82 - 2008-07-07
There are little things 'wrong' with it of course, but you can actually start to see the light at the end of the Uncanny Valley. This is damn nice work.
fluffy - 2008-07-07
Yeah, the big problem is just how rigid and extra-smooth the movements are. Which is odd considering the relative natural feel of the camera.

The technology is less important than what we do with it.

They chose to animate this ugly dude with bad hair when they could have been creating the most photorealistic dickbutt ever created. For fuck's sake, man, we are going to fucking blow ourselves the hell up one of these days because we do not understand our goddamn motherfucking assbutting priorities. Fuck, man.

AdamOfEden - 2008-07-07
:16 is why i voted this up.

I think the thing that starts hauling him up the other side of the valley is the fact that he's kind of ugly. The pit of the valley is populated by oily sex dolls - flawless, waxy, corpselike. This guy's bad skin, weak chin and thinning hair make him believable. Of course the amazing amount of detail is a big part of it too. You can see his cornea moving around under his eyelid!

The eyes pass. Everything else is really close.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2008-07-07
He looks like a TFL'er.
Randroid - 2008-07-08
This, this is it.

zatojones - 2008-07-08
All of England is full of potential TFLers

mouser - 2008-07-07
I think it's awesome work.
SolRo - 2008-07-07
Great work, and the nightmare fuel tag isn't for this.

Though it would be if he set the last expression to some inhuman settings for every parameter and the face just contorted instantly...now i have to remove a star because that wasn't done
yoyo1 - 2008-07-07
What tells us it's not a fake? maybe they used a real dutch person and used filters on the pictures?
Xiphias - 2008-07-08
yeah, a filter to make the dutch dude look more lifelike HEYOOO

ProfessorChaos - 2008-07-08
This is creepy, but only beacuse it looks like a close freind of mine.

Seriously. It's uncanny.
wormy_the_hole - 2008-07-23
God, he's... it's wearing contacts and everything. And the eyelashes even change color halfway through. The attention to detail is incredible.
petep - 2008-10-10
Pretty lifelike, but I'm still getting the adrenaline rush that God gave me so I could break his head against the wall.
klingerbgoode - 2008-11-18
Joel Hodgkin no!!!
Urburos - 2008-12-15
I've never been able to not tell the difference between real and CGI before. Kudos to this guy.
ABoyNamedCheese - 2009-04-05
