I think the thing that starts hauling him up the other side of the valley is the fact that he's kind of ugly. The pit of the valley is populated by oily sex dolls - flawless, waxy, corpselike. This guy's bad skin, weak chin and thinning hair make him believable. Of course the amazing amount of detail is a big part of it too. You can see his cornea moving around under his eyelid!
