In the MST3K companion book, the cast said they actually felt a little bad because it came off pretty mean spirited. They didn't seem to be losing too much sleep over it, though.
They also said that they changed the surnames of the characters from Redenbacher to Popcorn, in the hopes of not getting sued. Turns out they could of been sued, anyway, but figured nobody was paying any litigious attention to their cowtown puppet show.
