They do this kind of thing to throw the nuts a bone now and then. I remember one or two "UFOs: Is There?!" type reports back in the day.

This is what happens when The Weekly World News goes out of print... the weird shit slowly invades other media.

They've always been sorta sensational. Their goal is just to get people interested in science, but the reports were all written from the perspective that these were both hoaxes created by a few people who wanted to make money, so don't be too hard on them. I mainly read Scientific American because they will occasionally have features that make me feel like humanity isn't totally fucked. Like a nice new drug or way of helping people or something that will help me sleep better.

Scientific American uses Chupacabra and Bigfoot hoaxes to attract interest. Discovery channel used easily-angered testosterone cases who spent 95% of their time yelling at each other and 5% of their time building motorcycles. It seems, to spread the word about science, there's always a price to be paid...
