Boy, that looks terrible.
|
BHWW - 2008-08-20 Oh it more than looks terrible. Anyone even thinking of watching this, spare yourselves. It's mainly a lot of pathetic, desparate use of tiresome "LOOK CARTOON CHARACTERS, AND THEY'RE TALKING DIRTY" gags and a misogynistic streak that blooms into full-blown neurotic misogyny towards the end. It's not "awesomely" bad, it's just slimy and disturbing bad.

From what I've heard, there is a quite a story about Cool World's initial conception and the journey to it's eventual appearance on the silver screen. It seems to have been a very troubled production from the first second.

Dib - 2008-08-20 Doesn't that describe everything Ralph Bakshi has been associated with?

Camonk - 2008-08-20
Oh, Ralph Bakshi... It was interesting seeing a pre-craggy Gabriel Byrne, though.

Five starts for warning us of the dangers of having sexually attractive cartoons.
But still, the only good movie of this kind was "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and I fear we shall never see anything like it again.
|
NoCode - 2008-08-20 I remember liking Roger Rabbit a lot back in the day, and then it was on TV recently so I watched it but had to turn it off after less than an hour because JESUS CHRIST ALL THE SCREAMING AND BELLS AND HONKING AND LOUDNESS.

Yeah, I remember seeing a commercial trailer when this was first out.
At the age I was, it was easy to convince myself this would have been awesome. Seeing the trailer again, not so sure anymore.

I adore Bakshi but this movie was a travesty.

I'm really surprised that no hentai has tried this gimmick yet.

Minus one star for watching this in the theater the same day my girlfriend at the time dumped me.

As I understand it (from what Ralph told me) the movie was supposed to be a three hour horror movie, but just as he was about to start shooting he was handed a completely different script and ordered by the studio to make their version. Bassinger was also a huge pain in the ass because she wanted the movie to be something she could show her kids, she signed on for a movie about porking cartoons and wanted something to show her kids. I'm pretty sure this is around the time she bought that town somewhere down south.
Ralph claimed he had a version that was awesome, but I have my doubts, he wasn't the most truthful of dudes.

The scary part is, the preview makes it look a whole lot better than it actually was.
Gains points for the cartoon version of Holly being hotter than Kim Basinger.

Hmm, I wonder if Bakshi will finish Last Days of Coney Island.
I mean if he finished this I don't see why not. Unless he dies first.
